Non-profit Board Positions

Role: Board Member
Type: non-profit board / volunteer
Organization: Local Enhancment and Appreciation of Forests
Location: Ideally seeking candidates that reside within our service areas - Toronto, York Region, Durham Region

LEAF is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to the protection and enhancement of the urban forest in the Greater Toronto Area. For three decades, we have been planting native species on private and public lands and engaging citizens in urban forest stewardship and education programs.

The Board of Directors is responsible for the effective governance of the organization including vigorous pursuit of its mission and adherence to its principles. Board members are volunteers, who act as part of a team that ensures sustainability of the organization.

Prior board experience, as well as experience in the environmental sector will be considered assets. We are particularly interested in candidates with expertise in the following areas:

  • Financial management/oversight
  • Diversity, equity, inclusion and reconciliation
  • Urban forestry
  • Strategic planning

Duties

  • Undertake orientation and annual training related to diversity, equity, inclusion and reconciliation
  • Prepare for and attend bi-monthly board meetings
  • Monitor the performance of the organization in relation to the plans
  • Read and understand financial statements on a regular basis (training provided)
  • Participate in strategic planning
  • Review and approve governing policies
  • Participate in at least one committee
    • Executive (made up of the Officers: President, Secretary, Treasurer)
    • Finance
    • Board Development (training, recruitment, etc.)
    • Strategic Planning & Fundraising

  • Listen and share openly with respect for all voices
  • Act in good faith and in the best interests of the organization
  • Stay informed and up to date on issues related to the organization
  • Share knowledge and experience for the benefit of the organization
  • Work as a team member and support Board decisions
  • Demonstrate and encourage innovative thinking
  • Question and probe in a positive and constructive manner

Qualifications

  • Knowledge of the communities served by the organization (Toronto, York Region, Durham Region)
  • Commitment to organization’s mission and values
  • Commitment to anti-oppression and anti-racism
  • Ability and willingness to commit the required time to fulfill duties (~ 5 hours/month)
  • Willingness to learn by experience and openness to continuous learning
