Treasurer Position

Position: Treasurer (Volunteer Board Member)

We are seeking a detail-oriented and community-minded Treasurer to join our volunteer Board of Directors. As the financial steward of the Society, you will ensure the fiscal health and regulatory compliance of our organization, allowing us to continue our conservation and reconciliation work.

About Us

The W̱MÍYEŦEN Nature Sanctuary Society is a non-profit organization which serves as the environmental steward of a 42-acre sanctuary of forest, wetlands, and lake located at 1772 Millstream Road within the District of Highlands. The purposes of the Society are to:

  • preserve and protect the environment for the benefit of the public by acquiring and protecting land and natural areas, and conserving, protecting or restoring ecosystems and biodiversity on a long-term basis;
  • advance education of the public by providing retreats, workshops, and classes on topics related to the environment and environmental protection, in partnership with local First Nations;
  • advance education of the public and to address the needs of Indigenous peoples in Canada by providing culturally appropriate education, nature walks, and oral histories from Indigenous elders regarding the interdependence of plants, animals, humans and ecosystems; and
  • undertake activities ancillary and incidental to the furtherance of the above mentioned charitable purposes.

A cornerstone of our work is our alliance with local First Nations. The sanctuary lies within the traditional territories of the W̱SÁNEĆ (Saanich) Coast Salish Peoples, and we are committed to a partnership that honors Indigenous cultural use, land care, and ecological wisdom.

Position Details: Unpaid Volunteer / Board of Directors

Time Commitment: On average, 20 hours per month including one monthly 2 hour board meeting. (Board meetings can be attended in person or virtually).

General Responsibilities:

  • Act as signing officer for the Society
  • Oversee the banking; payment of bills; and management of donations, grants, revenues, and financial obligations of the Society.
  • Assist in the preparation, presentation and monitoring of an annual/multiyear budget
  • Safeguard assets through financial policies, controls and sound risk management practices
  • Offer financial insights to guide fundraising plans and long-term sustainability
  • Oversee the Society’s bookkeeping, financial records, statements and reports to ensure accuracy, alignment with accepted accounting practices, compliance with applicable laws, and support of Board decision-making and public transparency
  • Ensure timely preparation and completion of necessary filings to maintain the society’s non-profit status under the Society Act, and charitable organization status under the Federal Income Tax Act

Qualifications:

  • Current knowledge of accepted accounting practices; a professional accounting designation (CPA) is preferred.
  • A genuine commitment to environmental conservation and the Society’s strategic direction.
  • Previous experience with non-profit boards or charitable organizations is an asset.
  • Ability to explain financial concepts to non-financial board members clearly.
  • An understanding of, or willingness to learn about, the importance of reconciliation and First Nations partnerships in land stewardship.
