Non-profit Board Position

MuTransit Association is seeking a Board Member (Volunteer Opportunity)

Needed: Board Member
Type: non-profit board member / board of directors (unpaid)
Organization: MuTransit Association
Location: remote, anywhere in Canada

Who we are

MuTransit is an innovative non-profit organization that enhances public transit transparency through leveraging publicly-accessible data. Our work began with our revision of bus signage in the Greater Vancouver Area in 2024, and we are proud to be expanding bus stop redesigns to other cities in Canada in collaboration with multiple local transit advocacy groups.

We are guided by our mission to use data to enable people to better understand transit systems, and we are tremendously proud of our early engagement and enthusiasm for what we’ve built. These include:

  • promoting usage of a more sustainable and equitable transportation option,
  • contributing to advocacy for more and improved transit,
  • reducing anxiety for infrequent transit users and city visitors, and
  • allowing community members to better decide where they live, work, and visit based on available transit.

We are volunteer-based and actively working to incorporate as a federal non-profit organization in Canada. Working with transit advocacy groups in various cities, we value and welcome diversity and aim to be an accessible and inclusive community that honours, respects, and reflects the various ways people use public transit and get around in their communities.

The position

In anticipation of a busy year ahead, we are working to incorporate as a federal non-profit organization. As a part of this process, we are seeking an additional Board member in Canada. Candidates with experience in non-profit operations and governance will be prioritized, though all eligible applicants are encouraged to apply.

Responsibilities

As a valued member of our Board of Directors, you will:

  • Provide leadership to help MuTransit achieve its mission and uphold its values.
  • Lend domain expertise on public transportation advocacy and community engagement.
  • Provide strategic input as MuTransit incorporates as a federal non-profit organization and ensure compliance thereafter.
  • Be an advocate on behalf of MuTransit in communication and outreach initiatives.
  • Perform other duties as required by our Board of Directors.

Requirements

  • An understanding of, and experience with, non-profit operations and governance.
  • Knowledge of public transportation issues in urban areas.
  • An ability to commit the time required to fulfill the responsibilities described.
  • Knowledge of appropriate community resources and funding avenues is an asset.
  • Volunteer Board Member experience is an asset.

The time commitment for this role is a minimum 1-year term at 10-20 hours per month. Currently we are conducting business in a remote format. Meetings are held virtually.

Applications will be accepted on a rolling basis. It is our aim to have a Board which reflects the diversity of the communities we serve. We encourage applications from all qualified candidates. If you have a passion for advancement of public transit through publicly accessible data and community advocacy, and are interested in a volunteer leadership position in an innovative non-profit organization, please consider applying to join our Board of Directors.

We invite you to learn more about us at mutransit.org. Any questions about the recruitment process or our Board of Directors may be directed to fai@mutransit.org .
