Dogwood brings people together to transform our democracy, uphold Indigenous rights and defend the climate, land and water that sustain life in B.C.

With our allies, we work to break free from fossil fuels and counter corporate influence on our democracy. All of this work takes place on Indigenous territories amidst ongoing colonial violence and profound wealth inequality.

Dogwood is an independent, non-partisan, non-profit organization. We currently have 16 staff members, sustaining a network of more than 100,000 supporters, with volunteer teams in the Lower Mainland and on Vancouver Island.

We currently have an opening for a Northern Coordinator, reporting to our Energy Campaigner (based near Hazelton) to support and expand our work along LNG project corridors.

As part of our team, you will:

• Coordinate ongoing community outreach:
  • Organize local gatherings with friends and neighbours
  • Participate in existing community events like festivals, job fairs, work bees, film screenings and fundraisers
  • Collaborate with allies on larger regional events like town hall tours, rallies or conferences
• Travel the pipeline route, working with Dogwood’s Energy Campaigner and allies to understand community needs, explore economic alternatives and strengthen relationships with local leaders
• Support local community members to build skills and organize their neighbours
• Along with Dogwood’s Energy Campaigner, help allies and decision makers in urban centres to better understand Northern B.C.

To be considered for this position, you need to:

• Live in Northern B.C., with a solid understanding of the region
• Have a track record of building relationships with, and working collaboratively with people of diverse backgrounds, ages and abilities
• Feel comfortable meeting new people, organizing groups, visiting different communities and sometimes speaking in public
• Be committed to Dogwood’s mission to decolonize, decarbonize and democratize B.C.
• Have a valid B.C. drivers licence

Additional Experience and Skills

Other personal strengths, knowledge, lived experience, training or aptitudes in these areas would be considered additional assets in this role and we encourage you to highlight them in your application.

• Have existing connections with community-based groups and networks in Northern B.C.
• Have experience organizing events eg. planning, logistics, coordination with allies, volunteer recruitment
• Enthusiasm for learning on the job and experimenting with new approaches to community organizing
• Be comfortable adapting to a frequently changing task list and managing your own time as part of a distributed/remote team
• Be comfortable with digital tools for collaborating with co-workers and supporting volunteer engagement, such as the Google suite, Zoom, basic graphic design, contact management systems and messaging platforms

Physical requirements

This position involves active participation in community events that may require several hours of standing or walking, driving long distances, and lifting and carrying supplies. Part of the job will also require time spent at a computer.

Work arrangements

Dogwood offers a flexible, rewarding and unionized work environment including four weeks paid vacation starting in your first year; health, dental and paramedical benefits; and a baseline 30-hour work week. This is a remote position with desk work happening in the employee’s home and outreach work happening at many locations across the region. Although work time is flexible, both daytime and evening/weekend work will be required.
