Job Summary

As a key member of the Forestry Maintenance & Operations team, you’ll play an important role in caring for and sustaining the City’s valuable forestry assets. Reporting to the Supervisor, Forestry Maintenance & Operations, you’ll bring your technical expertise to a dynamic role that blends fieldwork, problem-solving, contractor oversight, and office-based support.

You’ll assess the health and condition of trees and other forestry assets, respond to service requests, identify and prioritize maintenance needs, and help ensure work is completed safely, efficiently, and to a high standard. You’ll also monitor and provide direction to contractors and support contract management activities across streets, parks, and City properties.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Monitor and assess the health and condition of existing and newly planted trees, vegetation, and other forestry assets on streets, parks, and natural areas.
  • Perform field audits to validate and confirm work assigned to contractors were completed in accordance with contract specifications.
  • Identifies any required maintenance work on forestry assets.
  • Serve as a first point of contact with residents for service requests and inquiries.
  • Accurately operate and maintain specialized scientific data collection, diagnostic, or geospatial equipment (i.e. GPS, GIS, RTK, RPAS, resistograph, sonic tomograph etc.).
  • Collects technical data and information, performs technical analysis and provides recommendations.
  • Safely operate and maintain forestry vehicles, equipment and tools.
  • Performs arboricultural tasks and assists the Forestry Maintenance and Operations team in organizing and planning work to be carried out.
  • Ensures the timely delivery of quality customer service and resolutions to service requests, complaints, and inquiries from the public, elected officials, or other City staff.
  • Cultivates effective working relationships with internal and external partners, other departments, divisions, and sections, and members of the public
  • Support the Supervisor(s) and/or Forestry Coordinator(s) with coordinating and administering the complete contract lifecycle, including preparation, procurement, execution, monitoring and closure.
  • Provide input into the preparation of effective specifications for tree maintenance, tree planting, and/or vegetation management contracts including analyzing bids and making recommendations.
  • Ensure contracts adhere to applicable legislation, regulations, policies, and requirements.
  • Ensure contractor performance aligns with contract specifications and service level agreements (SLAs).

Skills and Qualifications

  • Post-secondary degree or diploma in urban forestry, forestry, arboriculture, or related discipline.
  • Must be an ISA Certified Arborist and hold the Tree Risk Assessment Qualification (TRAQ) or be able to obtain within 6 months of hire.
  • Minimum of 2 years’ relevant experience in urban forestry.
  • Knowledge of urban forestry, arboriculture, and landscape construction principles and practices.
  • Experience with tree planting and establishment, or tree maintenance, or boulevard vegetation management on streets, parks, and City property, on hardscape and softscape.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to interact with residents, stakeholders and elected officials effectively.
  • Sound knowledge of applicable legislation, regulations, and policies (i.e. Occupational Health and Safety Act).
  • Must hold a valid Ontario G Driver's License or higher with an acceptable driving record.
  • Must be willing to obtain a current driver's abstract at your own expense.

Hourly Rate/Salary: $ 70,807.00 - $ 94,410.00
