Volunteer: Construction Assistant

About the Project
The Legacy Building Project is a grassroots housing initiative that works with special needs families on housing solutions that facilitate a better long-term housing future for family members with a developmental disability. The project is centered on sustainable design, gentle density, and community-led construction. We are currently working on our pilot project in North Toronto, where we offer students and emerging professionals a unique opportunity to gain construction experience in a collaborative environment.

What You Will Gain
- Hands-On Construction Experience: Bridge the gap between technical drawings and physical assembly by assisting with material preparation, installation, and landscaping.
- Portfolio & Site Documentation: Photograph real progress, study working details, and build practical field experience to enhance your professional portfolio and resume.
- Skill Development & Mentorship: Work alongside the construction lead to learn site coordination, tool operation, and construction safety protocols.
- Networking: Connect with other designers, trade practitioners, and peers across architecture and building science disciplines.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist on-site teams with installation, handling, measuring, and tool preparation.
- Help maintain job-site organization, safety compliance, and material staging.
- Support general site operations and collaborative building tasks under guidance.
Qualifications
- A keen interest in the construction industry, and a passion for helping others.
- Graduates from architecture, design, and construction programs would also be great candidates, but it is not required.
- Ability or interest in performing physical tasks outdoors on an active build site (e.g., lifting, digging, tidying, installing material, operating hand tools).
- Strong safety mindset, reliability, and eagerness to learn.
- CSA-approved steel-toe boots required. (Hard hats, high-vis vests, and safety glasses provided on site if needed).

- On-Site Training: The supervisor will train you on the job to help you develop and hone various construction skills.

- Safety & Credentials: On-site safety orientation and equipment training provided.
- References: Letters of recommendation and LinkedIn endorsements can be provided upon completion of minimum hours.
