Location: Meetings are mostly held virtually, but we are looking for local volunteers that are able to come out to the Ghost Watershed, located 60 km west of Calgary, for events, field days and planning sessions.

About the Ghost Watershed Alliance Society (GWAS):

Ghost Watershed Alliance Society is a non-profit organization dedicated to the protection and sustainable management of the Ghost Watershed region located in the Bow River Basin west of Calgary.

We work with communities, partners, and stakeholders to promote responsible land and water use and maintain healthy ecosystems. Through education, outreach and collaborative projects, GWAS aims to preserve source water and biodiversity in the watershed. Board members help guide the organization’s strategic direction, governance, and long-term impact of GWAS's work.

Role Description

As a volunteer Board Member for Ghost Watershed Alliance Society, you will participate in regular board meetings (held remotely) to provide governance, oversight, and strategic guidance. You will review organizational plans, policies, and financial information; contribute to decision-making; and support long-term planning for conservation and community engagement initiatives. Day-to-day responsibilities may include preparing for meetings, serving on committees, contributing to fundraising or outreach efforts, and offering expertise on organizational priorities. Board Members collaborate with other directors and staff, uphold the Society’s mission and values, and act as ambassadors for the organization in their networks. This is a remote volunteer position, with flexibility in time commitment aligned with board schedules and committee work. It is important to us to make sure that our volunteers feel their work with us is meaningful and that everyone enjoys their time with GWAS!

Qualifications:

• Experience in non-profit governance, board service, or organizational leadership, with an understanding of fiduciary responsibilities and strategic oversight.
• Background or strong interest in environmental conservation, watershed management, ecology, or related fields.
• Skills in strategic planning, policy development, and risk management to support long-term organizational sustainability.
• Communication and collaboration skills, including the ability to participate effectively in remote meetings and work with diverse stakeholders.
• Experience in fundraising, community outreach, stakeholder engagement, or partnership development is an asset.
• Comfort with digital tools (video conferencing, shared documents, email) to fulfill remote board duties.
• Commitment to equity, inclusion, and respectful engagement with communities and partners.
• Prior board experience is helpful but not required; candidates from a variety of professional and lived backgrounds are encouraged to apply.
