About EnviroCentre

EnviroCentre is an Ottawa-based environmental not-for-profit that supports residents, enterprises, and communities to find practical ways to reduce their environmental impact in ways that benefit our communities. Our four key impact areas are Home Energy Efficiency, Sustainable Transportation, Waste and Circular Economy, and Green Infrastructure. We have been working for over twenty-five years to promote practical climate action and awareness in our local communities and Eastern Ontario, and we are one of the leading agencies in environmental action.  For more information, please visit our website at envirocentre.ca.

The Board of Directors

EnviroCentre’s volunteer Board of Directors provides governance and oversight to the organization, contributing to business planning, organizational strategy, policy and compliance, financial stewardship, legal and ethical integrity and overall accountability. A board member can expect to participate in quarterly board meetings, as well as some committee work. Regular board duties will generally include review of quarterly financial statements and progress reports, development and/or review of policy and governance documents, risk analysis, review and approval of major contracts, Executive Director performance management and/or recruitment, board performance evaluation, and contribution to strategic planning processes, in collaboration with management. Board members are also invited to participate in community events and training opportunities.

As a board director for EnviroCentre, you join an energetic, engaged team who are committed to climate action, equity, and a future vision for Canada that catalyzes forward-thinking leadership and action. It is also a fun, supportive and social group. As a board director, you will have the opportunity to contribute to and shape some of the highest impact climate action projects in the region and beyond. You will be joining an inspirational and creative group of people who want to bring their background and expertise to make a meaningful and positive change to the environment.

The Board has a maximum of twelve (12) volunteer director positions, four (4) of which are sought to be filled. We are specifically seeking one candidate who is a Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA) to replace the current Board Treasurer. Board members serve for a 3-year term.

If you want to lend your skills to support the action, we’re looking for you!

Benefits

The benefits of being part of the EnviroCentre Board of Directors include:

  • Impactful leadership: You will have the opportunity to contribute to and shape some of the highest impact climate action projects in the region in the areas of sustainable buildings, transportation, business and more.
  • Professional growth: Grow your leadership, strategic thinking, financial and governance skills in a dynamic and collaborative environment.
  • Network development: Work alongside other passionate individuals who share a common vision and participate in community and board events to grow your professional network.
  • Knowledge development: Learn about the latest trends and solutions in climate action.

We’re Seeking

EnviroCentre is seeking four (4) candidates to grow our board of directors. We are looking for candidates who have knowledge and/or skills in one or more of the following areas:

  • Business management, particularly in operating and scaling a growing organization.
  • Equity, Diversity, Inclusion and Indigenization work, policy, and planning.
  • Sector experience from working in one or more of EnviroCentre’s focus areas (Home Energy Efficiency, Sustainable Transportation, Waste/Circular Economy, and Green Infrastructure).
  • Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA) to take on our Board Treasurer role.

Experience with not-for-profit boards or in organizational governance and management is considered a strong asset but is not essential. We do expect that candidates are committed to building a collaborative, supportive work environment and to accelerating Canada’s transition to a zero-emission economy, as this is the core of our work. Board members are expected to attend scheduled board meetings, actively participate in discussions, and come to meetings prepared. They are expected to engage in decision-making, respect confidentiality, follow policies, and collaborate with other board members and management.

EnviroCentre is an equal opportunity organization, committed to diversity and inclusion. We strive to maintain the 50/30 diversity target for our Board of Directors, and we aim wherever possible to reflect and engage our local community so that our plans and actions represent and are informed by all those impacted by our work.
