THE JANE GOODALL INSTITUTE OF CANADA SEEKS BOARD MEMBERS

Role: Board Member
Type: non-profit board / unpaid
Organization: Jane Goodall Institute of Canada
Location: Hybrid. Remote for most of the year with an in-person 3-day summit twice each year (in Toronto).
The Jane Goodall Institute of Canada is currently seeking experienced, committed and enthusiastic individuals to join our Board of Directors Fall 2026.
What is The Jane Goodall Institute of Canada?
The Jane Goodall Institute of Canada (JGIC) amplifies and scales community-led actions to create a world where animals, people, and the environment thrive together. We bridge science with traditional wisdom, support community initiatives, and empower young environmental leaders. JGIC is part of a global network of the Jane Goodall Institute, with chapters spanning five continents in 30 countries.

In Canada, we are equipping the next generation of conservation leaders through our youth-led Roots & Shoots program to build a more just and sustainable world. We’re also working with Indigenous partners to integrate Indigenous perspectives into everything we do.
In Africa, we are providing essential care for rescued chimpanzees and other wildlife at Tchimpounga Sanctuary in the Republic of Congo, and advancing community-led conservation initiatives that benefit animals, people, and the environment across countries in the “Chimpscape” region.
Rooted in Dr. Goodall’s transformative insights that you cannot save wildlife without improving the lives of people who share their habitat, we partner with communities leading conservation on their own lands. Grounded in Dr. Jane’s enduring message of hope through action, we believe that every individual makes a difference.
What is JGIC looking for in potential Board members?
JGIC sits at a pivotal and energizing moment, with the launch of its three-year strategic plan Hope in Action and steady organizational growth. The organization is more committed than ever before to advancing Dr. Jane Goodall’s legacy and impact after her passing in October 2025.
The JGIC Board members provide governance, strategic advice, fiduciary oversight, and act as ambassadors for JGIC. Ideal candidates are strategic thinking, results-oriented decision-makers who are committed to the cause.
Candidates are expected to commit to an estimated 3-10 hours per month, including a minimum of two videoconference board meetings and two in-person board summits per calendar year, as well as committee membership and some work between meetings. Board terms are 3-year terms, renewable up to 3 times. Most Board members stay at least two terms.

JGIC is deeply committed to equity, diversity, and inclusion. We believe diverse perspectives strengthen our governance and impact. We particularly welcome applications from people all across Canada, Indigenous peoples, persons of colour, persons with disabilities, persons of all sexual orientations and genders, and others with lived experiences, including those early in career and/or in post-secondary studies, that strengthen our work with diverse communities.
Ideal candidates will have some board and/or non-profit governance experience, and the willingness and ability to engage with others virtually.
Candidates who are experienced in any of the following priority board competency areas are strongly encouraged to apply:
