Jane Goodall Institute of Canada

Founded in 1993, the JGIC is the Canadian chapter of a dynamic global network of Jane Goodall Institutes around the world.

Inspired by the vision of our founder Dr. Jane Goodall, our vision is a healthy planet where people make compassionate choices to live sustainably and in harmony with each other, the environment and other animals.

In Africa, we support community-led conservation projects to protect key habitats for chimpanzees and great apes, while working to improve the wellbeing of local communities living in the these ecologically fragile areas.

In Canada, the JGIC partners with Indigenous-led organizations to tackle environmental inequity, biodiversity loss, and climate change; and through its Roots & Shoots program, empowers young people to take action to protect our shared home. JaneGoodall.ca

What You Can Do – Take Action

Action is hope, unleashed. Every day, we come to work and think: how can we inspire people to act? And how can those people, in turn, act in a way that inspires others to do the same? Action isn’t possible for all of us, all the time. But if you have the energy to do some good today, and inspire some good in others, then join us. We have a lot of work to do.

  1. ForeverWild — Join the fight against illegal wildlife trafficking so that animals can remain #ForeverWild. Act Now
  2. The Forest is Calling — It costs the environment a lot to make your cell phone. Take the pledge to recycle your phone and help save endangered species. Act Now
  3. Jane’s Green Hope — To protect global biodiversity, we must restore and protect the green spaces in our own communities. Will you help? Act Now

Roots and Shoots Canada

Dr. Jane Goodall started Roots & Shoots over 30 years ago when she met with some young people who were eager to fix local problems. She was struck by their energy, their optimism, and their willingness to tackle crises they didn’t create.

Roots & Shoots helps young people harness this energy and become the community leaders not just of tomorrow, but of today. Watch Jane talk about Roots & Shoots with Jimmy Fallon. Today, Roots & Shoots is a globally-recognized youth leadership program. In Canada, more than 12,000 young people are actively involved in projects. More than 80,000 community members are being directly impacted.

How it works – There are 4 steps to every Roots & Shoots project:

  1. Get Inspired
  2. Map Your Community
  3. Take Action
  4. Celebrate Your Impact!

Using our online guide, and with support available from Jane Goodall Institute of Canada staff, Roots & Shoots teaches young people how to design projects that tackle the intersection of biodiversity loss (animals), environmental inequity (people), and climate change (the environment). Oh, and it’s free!

Have you already developed and implemented your Roots & Shoots project? Let us know so we can share your story and inspire others to get involved – report your project here!

Please note: Applications for our A.P.E. Fund – which provides support for Roots & Shoots projects – are available annually. You can check out previous projects, and the current timeline for funding, on our A.P.E. Fund page.
