About Crossing the Divide

Crossing the Divide is a non-profit organization that provides outdoor adventure opportunities for youth, focusing on connecting young people with nature and fostering personal growth through challenging wilderness experiences.

Position Overview

As a Wilderness Guide, you will be responsible for leading youth on various outdoor expeditions, ensuring their safety, well-being, and growth throughout the trip. This role requires flexibility, a strong sense of adventure, and an ability to plan and execute outdoor trips with a high level of responsibility.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and guide youth on outdoor trips, including hiking, canoeing, and stand-up paddleboarding.
  • Plan, organize, and facilitate both single-day and multi-day wilderness expeditions.
  • Rent any necessary gear and purchase groceries for trips.
  • Provide leadership and mentorship to youth, ensuring a positive and inclusive group dynamic.
  • Adapt to changes in the schedule as needed, ensuring that the trip meets the needs of the youth and the program.
  • Handle safety procedures, including risk management, navigation, and emergency response.
  • Ensure all necessary paperwork and reports are completed before and after trips.
  • Maintain clear and consistent communication with the CTD board and guides.

Minimum Requirements

  • 80-hour Wilderness First Aid certification.
  • Outdoor Council of Canada (OCC) Field Leader Certification or equivalent
  • Proven experience in guiding outdoor adventures - particularly hiking, canoeing and multi day trips.
  • Strong organizational and communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • Police information check with vulnerable sectors check [valid within 6 months of start date].

Preferred Qualifications (Assets)

  • Experience working with youth at risk.
  • ACMG (Association of Canadian Mountain Guides) certification.
  • Swift Water Rescue 1 & 2
  • Experience in hiking, canoeing, stand-up paddleboarding and rock climbing.

Schedule

  • Trips are typically scheduled Monday to Thursday, with a mix of multi-day and single-day trips.
  • Flexibility is required, as some trips may require guides to depart on Sunday evening or include long days based on client needs.

Pay

  • $1,000 guaranteed weekly salary for a 4-day work week. Additional hours beyond this are compensated at a $250/day guiding rate or $26.50/hour, depending on the nature of the work.
