Help Grow Community in Nature

The Black Environmental Initiative (BEI) believes that everyone deserves to experience the healing power of nature.

We are a Black-led environmental organization working alongside Black and other equity-denied communities to create greener neighbourhoods, stronger communities, and new pathways into environmental leadership.

Our work includes planting trees, growing food, creating community gardens, supporting youth leadership, and bringing families together through nature.

We're looking for someone who doesn't just organize events.

We're looking for someone who loves connecting with people and growing community.

Someone who can walk into a room, make everyone feel welcome, build genuine relationships, and create spaces where youth and families want to return week after week.

If you believe that community is built one relationship at a time, we'd love to meet you.

About the Role

The Community Activator is responsible for growing the BEI community.

You will recruit youth and families, build partnerships with organizations across the GTA, activate our programming at the Maloca Community Garden and in neighbourhoods such as Jane and Finch, welcome participants, and help make BEI activities feel like "home" for participants.

What You'll Do

Build Community

  • Welcome participants to BEI programs and help everyone feel they belong.
  • Recruit youth, families and volunteers to participate in BEI activities.
  • Build lasting relationships that encourage people to return and become part of the BEI community.
  • Help create an atmosphere that is joyful, welcoming and inspiring.

Activate Our Programs

Support outreach and engagement for programs including:

  • Roots for Resilience
  • Beyond Provision Grounds
  • Community tree planting events
  • Environmental education workshops
  • Community celebrations
  • Volunteer activities

Most of your work will take place in communities, parks, gardens and community spaces rather than behind a desk.

Build Partnerships

Develop relationships with:

  • Community organizations
  • Schools
  • Youth groups
  • Housing providers
  • Faith communities
  • Resident associations
  • Local leaders

Your goal is to help these organizations connect their communities with BEI programming.

Who You Are

You are positive and relaxed

You naturally bring people together.

You believe nature can strengthen communities.

You are excited about environmental justice and helping communities that have historically had fewer opportunities to access green space.

We'd Love to Meet You If...

You have experience in areas such as:

  • Community engagement
  • Youth work
  • Community organizing
  • Recreation
  • Event coordination
  • Volunteer management
  • Environmental education
  • Social services
  • Grassroots organizing

We value lived experience, leadership and relationship-building experience in Black communities in Toronto.

Why Join BEI?

Your work will directly help:

  • connect youth with nature
  • strengthen Black communities
  • create greener neighbourhoods
  • develop future environmental leaders

If you've ever wished there were more Black families enjoying parks, forests, gardens and environmental spaces, this is an opportunity to help make that vision a reality.
