Sustainable Gardening

Hiring: Gardener – Full or Part Time (3–5 days/week), April–December
Company: Good Earth Gardening Co.
Location: West End Toronto

Good Earth Gardening Co. is a small and mighty team maintaining, installing, and designing installing residential gardens across Toronto’s west end — from Bloor West Village to Swansea, and the Junction to the Kingsway. We focus on sustainable practices, thoughtful care, and creating outdoor spaces that foster beauty, biodiversity, and connection.

With a 20-year history and new ownership over the past two years, our growth continues to come primarily through referrals and long-standing client relationships. We care deeply about maintaining our strong reputation while continuing to grow in a way that feels grounded and sustainable.

The Role

You’re a plant lover who enjoys outdoor, hands-on work and finds satisfaction in doing it well. You’re curious, dependable, efficient, and notice the details. You’re comfortable interacting with clients in a warm, respectful way and appreciate being part of a supportive, hard-working crew of women who care deeply about their work and each other.

Previous gardening experience, whether personal, educational, or professional, is valuable. A solid understanding of plant care and soil health is important, but curiosity and a sincere desire for continual learning can be just as promising.

Working as part of a team, responsibilities include:

  • Regularly maintaining a full roster of residential gardens
  • Planting, weeding, pruning, deadheading, mulching, edging, and seasonal clean-ups
  • Assisting with new garden installations
  • Hand pruning shrubs and small trees (may require pole pruning and 6’ ladder work)
  • Assisting with seasonal planter arrangements
  • Maintaining high standards of care, cleanliness, and safety for all tools and garden sites
  • Collaborating and problem-solving with crew mates

Qualifications

  • Strong knowledge of plant care, identification, and basic pest management
  • Comfortable with sustained physical work (bending, kneeling, lifting) for up to 7 hours/day
  • Able to work outdoors in varying weather conditions
  • Comfortable communicating and tracking hours via company app
  • Valid driver’s license and access to own vehicle strongly preferred (we travel between multiple sites daily, with no company vehicle)

Equipment

  • Weather-appropriate clothing, gardening gloves, and comfortable sturdy footwear required
  • Personal hand tools welcome (pruners, weeding knife, hand rake etc.) but not required – we can provide tools; no gas-powered machines used

Hours

  • Typical day: 8:30am–3:00pm (end time varies by job)
  • 5 days/week during spring and fall, 4 days/week likely in summer
  • No weekends
  • Early April to early December season
  • Flexible and accommodating for personal and family needs whenever possible

Compensation

  • $22–$32/hour, based on experience
  • Paid breaks
  • This is an independent subcontractor position
