Hiring: Ecological Technician
Company: Keneco Environmental Inc.
Location: based in Calgary, Alberta

Keneco Environmental Inc. is seeking an Ecological Technician to support environmental assessment, reclamation, and environmental monitoring programs associated with upstream oil and gas developments across Alberta and Saskatchewan.

This position is primarily based in Calgary, with regular field work at project sites across Alberta and Saskatchewan. The successful candidate will participate in environmental field programs, collect and analyze environmental data, and assist in preparing technical documentation in accordance with applicable provincial environmental and reclamation requirements.

This role is suited for candidates with prior hands-on experience in environmental and ecological field programs who are comfortable working with limited supervision.

Salary: $37.00 per hour (40 hours per week; overtime available after 44 hours per week)

Responsibilities

  • Conduct ecological and environmental field investigations, including soil, groundwater, surface water, and vegetation assessments
  • Assist in conducting Phase I and Phase II Environmental Site Assessments (ESAs) and Detailed Site Assessments (DSAs)
  • Conduct field surveys and collect environmental data and samples to support environmental assessments and reclamation projects.
  • Monitor air, water, and soil quality and assist in interpreting analytical results in accordance with applicable environmental guidelines
  • Collect, document, and maintain field data related to soil quality, vegetation establishment, land disturbance, and reclamation progress
  • Conduct vegetation and site assessments to evaluate ecological conditions and support reclamation and closure objectives
  • Support reclamation and remediation projects, including site inspections, soil management activities, and monitoring of revegetation progress
  • Monitor field activities and contractor operations to ensure compliance with environmental, reclamation, and health and safety requirements
  • Prepare and contribute to technical reports, including environmental site assessments, reclamation reports, and regulatory submissions
  • Assist with the coordination of field programs, including scheduling, equipment preparation, and logistics
  • Ensure compliance with provincial environmental and reclamation regulations and company health and safety procedures

Education

  • Diploma or degree in Environmental engineering technology/ environmental technology, Environmental Science, or a related field.

Experience

  • Minimum 3 years of relevant experience in environmental or ecological field work, environmental consulting, or a related field
  • Experience supporting environmental site assessments (Phase I and Phase II preferred)
  • Experience conducting environmental monitoring, field surveys, or ecological assessments
  • Experience working on upstream oil and gas sites is considered an asset
  • Experience supporting reclamation or remediation projects is considered an asset, including familiarity with reclamation-related Detailed Site Assessments (DSAs) and provincial reclamation certification processes in Alberta and Saskatchewan.

Skills & Technical Knowledge

  • Knowledge of environmental sampling, monitoring, and site assessment methodologies
  • Ability to collect, interpret, and analyze environmental and ecological data
  • Strong technical writing and documentation skills
  • Strong organizational and communication skills
  • Familiarity with environmental considerations associated with upstream oil and gas sites in Alberta and Saskatchewan
  • Familiarity with applicable provincial regulatory frameworks including Alberta Energy Regulator (AER), Alberta Environment and Protected Areas, and Saskatchewan Ministry of Energy and Resources
  • Experience applying provincial soil and groundwater quality guidelines and reclamation criteria is considered an asset

Additional Requirements

  • Valid Class 5 driver's license
  • Willingness and ability to travel to remote field locations across Alberta and Saskatchewan
  • Ability to work in various weather conditions and field environments

Safety Certifications (Asset)

  • H₂S Alive
  • Standard First Aid with CPR
  • Ground Disturbance Level II
  • WHMIS
  • Transportation of Dangerous Goods (TDG)
