Position: Communications Technician

Location: This position is based at Ontario Nature’s Head Office – 192 Spadina Ave, Suite 110, Toronto, ON. This position can work remotely within Ontario in accordance with our Remote Work Policy. The selected candidate must be willing to work from the head office occasionally for team meetings and as requested.

Position Overview

The Communications Technician plays an important role in supporting Ontario Nature’s public relations, fundraising and engagement efforts. From maintaining our websites and digital software to producing and distributing content, the role helps ensure that our stories, campaigns and opportunities reach and engage people across the province.

The position is perfect for someone who enjoys both communications and technology, and is looking for a varied, hands-on role that combines digital outreach, content creation and systems support. We are seeking an adaptable and highly organized person, with strong communication skills and an interest in using digital tools to support the protection of wild species and wild spaces.

The successful candidate will join a team that values collaboration and continuous improvement. Reporting to the Communications and Engagement Director, the technician will work with staff across the organization to support impactful communications, engagement and fundraising.

Principal Responsibilities

Website and Digital Communications Support

  • Maintain and update Ontario Nature’s websites and digital content to support communications, fundraising and engagement objectives.
  • Support website design, coding, maintenance and continuous improvement to enhance usability, accessibility and user experience.
  • Administer online software (e.g., petition, webinars, donation, digital publication reader) and engagement platforms to support engagement initiatives.
  • Support the production and distribution of email communications and digital outreach materials.

Publications Support

  • Support the production and promotion of ON Nature magazine and other publications through photo research, proofreading, factchecking and content preparation.

Promotion and Engagement Support

  • Provide communications and production support for campaigns, events, fundraising and engagement activities.
  • Monitor communications and engagement metrics and support reporting on performance and trends.
  • Support media monitoring and outreach activities that promote awareness of Ontario Nature’s work.
  • Support multimedia content creation for events, campaigns and projects, including photo and video editing.

Technology Support

  • Support the reliable operation of communications and engagement technology platforms and systems through maintenance, troubleshooting and coordination with staff and service providers.
  • Assist with data management, system backups and implementation of cybersecurity practices.

Qualifications

  • Post-secondary education in communications, marketing, digital media, information technology or a related field.
  • Experience maintaining websites and applying website design and coding skills.
  • Experience supporting communications, digital engagement and related activities.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Comfort working with customer relations management systems (such as Blackbaud or similar technologies).
  • Ability to quickly learn new software and systems.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to work independently while contributing effectively as part of a team.
  • Interest in environmental issues and conservation.

Desirable Assets

  • Experience with WordPress, Blackbaud products or similar systems.
  • Experience with graphic design (e.g., Adobe Creative Suite) and video editing.
  • Familiarity with website accessibility standards and analytics tools such as Google Analytics.
  • Knowledge of wild species and wild spaces in Ontario.

Anticipated Start Date: September 2026
Type of Position: Full-time, permanent
Compensation: $49,000 – $60,000 per year

Working Conditions: This position requires flexibility to accommodate occasional work outside standard working hours. The position requires extensive sitting, typing and time spent viewing computer screens.
