Outdoor Recreation in BC

The Federation of Mountain Clubs of British Columbia (FMCBC) is looking for a Treasurer and a Secretary to join our volunteer Board of Directors. Please find information about the two volunteer roles below.

Roles: Board Treasurer / Board Secretary
Type: non-profit board member / unpaid
Organization: Federation of Mountain Clubs of British Columbia
Location: Remote in BC
Length: 2 years, with option for extension
Start Date: May 30th, 2026

About FMCBC:

FCMCB is the only province-wide umbrella organization dedicated to protecting and maintaining public, non-motorized access to BC’s trails and backcountry.

For over 50 years, we have represented the interests of outdoor clubs from every corner of the province and have provided a united voice on issues related to non-motorized backcountry recreation.

FMCBC is a coalition of over 50 clubs representing thousands of non-motorized backcountry recreationists across British Columbia.

Our member clubs promote and advocate for non-motorized outdoor recreation by maintaining trails and huts, organizing trips, and offering instructional and mentorship programs.

FMCBC is committed to enhancing access to these spaces for public recreation while supporting grassroots initiatives that align with our values of accessibility, inclusion, and environmental responsibility.

Treasurer Role Description (pdf)

As the Treasurer, you will be responsible for maintaining accurate financial records, managing our budget, and ensuring compliance with financial regulations. You’ll work closely with the board to keep our finances in check and support our grant applications and audits.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Maintain financial records and documentation
  • Ensure compliance with financial regulations
  • Assist with grant applications and audit preparations
  • Manage banking activities and financial reporting
  • Collaborate on budget creation and monitoring

What we’re looking for in a Treasurer:

  • Strong financial management and organizational skills.
  • A passion for outdoor recreation and ensuring equitable, sustainable trail access for all.
  • A collaborative mindset and the ability to ask good questions, listen thoughtfully, and help guide decisions.
  • Clear communication and transparency in financial matters.
  • Knowledge of financial regulations for charities.
  • Some financial leadership experience, ideally within a nonprofit, volunteer-run, or outdoor organization.

Time Commitment:

  • 5 hours/month (June-February), 15 hours/month (March-May)
  • Attend monthly Board of Director Zoom meetings
  • Attend annual virtual AGM

Secretary Role Description (pdf)

The Board Secretary at FMCBC plays a critical leadership role in ensuring effective operations, organization, and governance within the Board of Directors. This position goes beyond administrative duties, serving as a governance advisor, strategic partner, and key liaison between the Board, management, and stakeholders. The Secretary is responsible for maintaining accurate records, ensuring compliance with legal and ethical obligations, and fostering a strong and effective board. The Board Secretary will work closely with the Communications Manager, who serves as a primary collaborator in strategic operations, stakeholder engagement, and governance support.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Governance oversight, including ensuring compliance with FMCBC bylaws, policies, and regulations, and guiding the board on governance best practices and procedures.
  • Assist in the preparation and filing of necessary documents, such as annual reports and board resolutions.
  • Collaborating with the President and Communications Manager to set meeting agendas that align with strategic priorities and organizational goals.
  • Lead the orientation and training for new board members.
  • Facilitate evaluations, board development and engagement initiatives.
  • Play a key role in organizational risk assessment and mitigation efforts. Ensure proper crisis response procedures are in place and followed when needed.
  • Handle sensitive information with discretion and maintain confidentiality regarding board discussions and decisions.
  • Uphold the highest standards of professionalism, ethical conduct, and governance integrity.
  • Meeting Preparation, Coordination & Documentation:
    • Prepare and distribute meeting agendas, documents, and materials in collaboration with the President, Communications Manager, and relevant stakeholders.
    • Coordinate logistics for board meetings, primarily held via Zoom.
    • Attend all board meetings and accurately record minutes, ensuring clear documentation of key discussions, decisions, and action items.
    • Distribute approved meeting minutes promptly to all board members and relevant stakeholders.
    • Maintain a secure and accessible filing system for all official board documents, including meeting minutes, resolutions, and legal documents.

Time Commitment:

  • Around 5-10 hours/month
  • Attend monthly Board of Director Zoom meetings
  • Attend and play a key role in planning annual virtual AGM
