The Howl Experience is an advocate for equity and is committed to ensuring our team is diverse, inclusive and reflective of the youth demographics we serve. We welcome Indigenous applicants of intersecting identities for this position, including racialized minorities, women, persons with disabilities, persons of various sexual orientations and gender identities, and others.

Indigenous candidates from Howl’s Yukon partner communities (i.e. Kluane First Nation, Champagne and Aishihik First Nations, the White River First Nation, Kwanlin Dün First Nation and the Ta’an Kwäch’än Council) are preferred. As Howl seeks to maintain its commitment to equity-deserving youth, you are encouraged to self-identify within your application.

About The Howl Experience:
The Howl Experience is a registered charity co-led by Indigenous and non-Indigenous educators on a mission to help youth build knowledge and skills in Truth and Reconciliation, climate justice, community leadership, and resilience. As educators, we know that conventional schooling doesn’t work for everyone. Through programs ranging in length from 3 to 10 days, we work with Indigenous Elders, Knowledge Keepers, and community leaders across the country to bring diverse youth together for learning experiences that deepen their connection to themselves, their communities, and the land so they can build purposeful career and life pathways. Our commitment to doing education differently is driven by our four core principles:

  • Two-Eyed Seeing: We support youth to see the potential of solutions built on the combined strength of Indigenous knowledges and mainstream knowledges.
  • All My Relations: Howl programs encourage participants to appreciate the interconnectedness of all beings and to better understand the environmental, social and economic systems that shape their experience of the world, including the inequities they reproduce.
  • Wise Practices: Howl does not have a ‘one-size-fits-all’ approach to programming. Our programs - designed in close collaboration with members of the communities in which we work, are inherently community-specific.
  • Trauma-informed programming and staff: While we don’t offer treatment programs and shouldn’t be seen as professional therapy, we recognize that participants’ histories impact their ability to learn and show up in community. As such, we take care to create safe spaces for participants to come - and contribute - as they are.

Since 2022, Howl has served over 1200 Indigenous and non-Indigenous youth from across Canada through programs in the Rockies, Yukon, and Nova Scotia. Through our programs, our Howlers (youth participants) live and eat together in shared accommodation; connect with local ecosystems through intentional time on the land and water; learn about local issues and culture from Knowledge Keepers, community leaders and grassroots organizations; give back to people and place through service learning; and build friendships to last a lifetime. Following a Howl Experience, youth are connected with our Canada-wide network and provided continuous support through career coaching, workshops, and community building opportunities.
