Position Overview

Reporting to the Manager, Education & Community Development, the Regional Lead is responsible for coordinating and implementing the Canadian Wildlife Federation’s (CWF) education and community development programs delivered through the Canadian Centre for Nature-based Education (CCNbE) within an assigned region.

The Regional Lead plays a key role in delivering education programming, supporting community access to nature-based learning, and fostering strong regional relationships with partners, participants, and volunteers. This role involves a combination of program planning and delivery, community engagement, volunteer coordination, and fund development in support of CWF’s mission and CCNbE objectives.

Through effective relationship building and the application of asset-based community development approaches, this role connects youth, educators, volunteers, and community partners to a wide range of conservation and nature-based education opportunities across their region, whether delivered by CWF/CCNbE or aligned partner organizations.

Duties and Responsibilities

Program Coordination & Delivery:

• Plans, coordinates, and supports the delivery of nature-based education programs within a designated region.
• Secures access to program locations, equipment, and materials to support the safe and effective delivery of program activities.
• Conducts regional-level risk assessments for outdoor and community-based activities and ensures compliance with health and safety policies and procedures.
• Provides on-site coordination and local support to participants and volunteers throughout program activities, including responding to emerging issues and escalating concerns as required.
• Tracks program activities, participation, and outcomes, and provides regional feedback, reports, and insights to support program evaluation, continuous improvement, and future initiatives.
• Collaborates with Marketing & Communications to share regional stories and learning outcomes that enhance awareness of nature-based education and conservation.

Volunteer & Participant Engagement:

• Recruits, trains, and manages regional program volunteers.
• Provides mentorship and guidance to youth and community participants to support positive, inclusive, and engaging learning experiences.
• Supports youth leadership development and stewardship by connecting participants to ongoing learning, volunteer, or conservation opportunities.
• Facilitate team-building activities that inspire conservation action and foster community involvement.

Community & Partnership Development:

• Establishes and maintains strong partnerships with schools, libraries, community organizations, businesses, and Indigenous communities.
• Identifies, maps, and nurtures local community assets related to nature-based learning and conservation using an asset-based community development approach.
• Connects youth, educators, and community members to relevant nature-based education and conservation opportunities, CWF/CCNbE programs, and aligned partner initiatives.
• Promotes CWF/CCNbE programs to diverse audiences through tailored regional outreach strategies.
• Represents CWF/CCNbE at community events, gatherings, conferences, public forums, and outreach activities to strengthen relationships and awareness of conservation pathways.

Fund Development Support:

• Works with the Fund Development and Program Management teams to identify and pursue funding opportunities.
• Build and maintain relationships with local donors, sponsors, and partners to support fundraising efforts.
• Assists with writing grant proposals and preparing funding reports.
• Supports the planning and execution of regional fundraising campaigns and events.

Assists with other Education activities as required.

Education, Experience, and Abilities

Education

• Bachelor’s Degree, or an equivalent combination of education and experience, in Education, Environmental Studies, Community Development, or a related field.

Experience

• A minimum of 2 years of related experience.

Work Conditions

• Full-time indeterminate position
• Typically working Monday through Friday for 37.5 hours per week.
• Location: Between Lethbridge and Edmonton Alberta, Highway 2 Corridor
• Employee regularly works in outdoor conditions for programming, with potential exposure to a noisy work environment and unpredictable weather conditions.
• Employee may be exposed to mental stress due to:
  • Regular travel for on-site fieldwork.
  • Regular interruptions and questions from participants, volunteers, or external partners requiring immediate attention.
  • Managing conflicting demands from participants, external partners, and work activities.
  • Unpredictable situations from environmental factors and program participants.
  • Emotionally charged situations that deal with interpersonal conflict with program participants.

Physical Skills

• Skill, coordination, and/or speed are required for:
  • Use of a computer and typing (frequent)
  • Use of equipment such as a GPS, binoculars, gardening tools, and first aid kits (regular)
  • Coordinating and facilitating outdoor programming (regular)
  • Travel/Driving (regular)
