Why do people join our team? It really comes down to this:

We have fun while making a difference by helping reach residents and provide information that helps them make wise daily choices, such as how to conserve water that help address local, real-life issues associated with climate change and resource management in the Vancouver region.

You will learn about how regional government delivers programs for awareness, education and behaviour change. This work will also give you opportunities to demonstrate your skills to manage the work, contribute to a team and deliver results that will set you apart in a competitive job market. We have a track record of team members landing great full-time positions that require proven experience with the type of responsibility we develop and that few summer positions offer.

It's got flexibility. There are different ways to be involved and several contract positions available. You can choose to work 20-25 hours a week or as few as 8 hours per week. This position fits well with other commitments. You can drive your own vehicle, ride with a partner or have car share vehicle expenses reimbursed.

It offers incredible networking. We're delivering services for a regional level of government. You'll learn about careers and make connections. We also deliver outreach in communities in the region and you might want to be considered for those additional work opportunities as well. The experiences people have on this team bring them back year after year.

Background:

The Drinking Water Conservation Plan Summer Support Program was delivered for 3 consecutive years 2022-24. It was developed in coordination with member jurisdictions throughout Metro Vancouver to support their enforcement and education programs regarding lawn watering restrictions.

This year, monitoring is being expanded from lawn watering to all outdoor watering. The objectives of the Program this year are:

  • To educate residents regarding the active watering restrictions;
  • To have a strong presence in the communities relaying information about water conservation (NEW); and
  • To strengthen monitoring for outdoor watering compliance and support members in reducing non-compliant watering practices.

The Program will consist of teams of 2 travelling through areas to look for evidence of non-compliant outdoor watering. When evidence of an infraction is found, field staff record data and leave printed information in the mailbox or at the door for residents of that address.

Information and data will be shared between Metro Vancouver and the member jurisdiction, allowing for potential follow up by local enforcement. On any given day, 10 to 20 team members will work in pairs in 5 to 10 different vehicles to collect data in different geographic zones of the region, such as: 1) North Shore, 2) Richmond, 3) Coquitlam/Port Moody, 4) Burnaby/New West, 5) Surrey, Delta, and Langley Township.

Work Duties:

  • Working with a team member, drive to the most cost effective meetup point for ride sharing to/from the starting and ending point of the day.
  • Observe non-compliant outdoor watering using criteria, while driving in the assigned zone.
  • One member of each pair will drive the route and cross checks data entry while the other records observations into software using a smartphone.
  • Complete and deliver a notice of infraction with handwritten information, along with print information, to non-compliant residences.
  • Participate actively in training provided.
  • Water conservation knowledge is not required.
  • A vehicle insured for business use and $5M driver liability, and a drivers licence, is preferred but not required. If you are interested in this work and do not have access to a vehicle, you may be partnered up with a driver or your car share expenses will be reimbursed.

Our team is looking for…

  • Conscientious, reliable individuals with a willingness to commit to work, as scheduled.
  • The ability to diligently observe details and patterns, and record them accurately and thoroughly according to specific program requirements.
  • A collaborative mindset for team-based work, and active participation in team meetings.
  • Strategic thinking ability to contribute to the efficiency, effectiveness , and take initiative to suggest ongoing improvements for this project.
  • Willingness to travel to different neighbourhoods within the Greater Metro Vancouver area.
