Position: Community Organizing Assistant

For 35 years, Georgia Strait Alliance has played a leading role in bringing communities together to address the many threats to the Salish Sea. We are excited to be growing our team at a time of positive change and evolution in our organization.

Through the generous funding from Canada Summer Jobs, we are hiring a summer Community Organizing Assistant.

• Compensation: $24.00/hour, plus vacation pay and sick leave
• Preferred start date: June 1, 2026
• Position duration: 34 hours per week; 8 weeks per Canada Summer Jobs requirements
• Location: Remote, in office, and field-based within the Vancouver-Quadra riding
• Please note: Interviews will be held on a rolling basis as qualified applications are received, so please apply early. We operate from Monday-Thursday but the position requires weekend and evening availability.

Eligibility:

Due to funding restriction, the successful applicant must be 30 years or younger on the date of hiring; hold Canadian citizenship, permanent resident, or refugee status; and be able to work in the federal electoral riding of Vancouver Quadra.

About the position:

Reporting to the Campaigns Manager, the Community Organizing Assistant will play a key role in revamping our outreach materials, translating campaigns and programs into outward facing materials, and expanding our presence on the ground across the Vancouver Quadra riding. The successful candidate will support GSA’s community outreach, attend public events, and foster relationships with local residents, organizations, and coastal communities. The role is designed to organize and improve our community outreach, build relationships with communities, raise awareness about marine and climate issues, and mobilize public support for campaigns related to the Salish Sea.

Key Responsibilities:

• Revise and expand outreach materials, translating campaigns and programs to both educational materials and strategic calls to action
• Maintain outreach tracking systems (event tracking logs, inventory of materials, brief impact reports, work planning spreadsheets), and support ordering new and old materials
• Assist in attending, organizing, and delivering public engagement activities (e.g. tabling, volunteer events, etc.) as well as more focussed climate and conservation events that may include raffle ticket sales and fundraising support
• Build relationships with individuals and organizations in Vancouver where possible
• Identify new opportunities for community visibility and grassroots connections
• Contribute to communications through social media content, photos, and short blogs
• Help plan and deliver high impact work or assist in the development of special projects as time allows
• Collaborate with team members in planning and reporting tasks as needed

Experience and Qualifications:

We understand that not all experience looks the same, and encourage applicants to share how their experiences relate to the qualities below:

• Strong interpersonal and verbal communication skills
• Experience in community outreach, organizing, or event coordination
• Graphic design skills, and/or experience translating campaigns and programs into educational and action-oriented materials
• Knowledge of or interest in marine protection, environmental justice, and coastal climate issues
• Strong attention to detail, organizational- and time-management skills
• Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a remote team setting
• Flexible availability including some evenings and weekends
• The ability to travel throughout the riding while carrying tabling supplies (having access to a car is preferable)
• Digital competency with email, spreadsheets, and social platforms (Instagram, Facebook, Bluesky, etc.)
• Ability to create engaging outreach-related content (photos, short texts, social media posts)
• A justice based approach to work that includes cultural and historic awareness of colonization, Indigenous sovereignty, and JEDDI principles (Justice, Equity, Diversity, Decolonization, and Inclusion)

It would also be helpful if you have any of the following skills, qualifications or equivalent experiences, though they are by no means required:

• Familiarity with communities, organizations, and initiatives in Vancouver and the lower mainland
• Experience with creative engagement tools (e.g. storytelling, visual media, social media campaigns) and project management software
• Experience with climate and marine conservation work
