Field Research Assistant -- Squash Bee Project, University of Guelph

Position: Research Assistant
Type: age 30 & under / summer
University: University of Guelph, School of Environmental Sciences

Location: Candidates must live within driving distance of Lakefield, Peterborough County, Ontario K0L 2H0.

  • April 30-August 30, 2026
  • 30 h/week, early mornings to noon, about 6 hours/day
  • $20/h

This position is primarily an outside, field position as part of a team of 4 people, supervised by Dr. Susan Chan.

The purpose of the research trial is to determine if ground-nesting squash bees are impacted by pesticides applied to seeds both in their nesting habitat and in their nectar and pollen sources. All employees will be properly trained and there is no risk of stinging from these bees.

A successful candidate will be:

  • Reliable, punctual, flexible, and organized
  • Willing to receive direction from a supervisor
  • Able to do physical labour outside
  • Able to gather accurate data from observations after training
  • Willing to work from about 6 am to noon, though this may vary
  • Able to travel to the study site in Selwyn Township on their own
  • Enthusiastic about environmental issues
  • No previous experience or science background is required

The job involves:

  • physical labour,
  • problem solving,
  • small construction projects (we'll show you how),
  • observation and data gathering (again, we'll show you how),
  • research site maintenance
