POSITION OVERVIEW

The Finance Director at ALUS is responsible for overseeing all financial activities across the organization, ensuring robust fiscal management, compliance, and stewardship of resources. This role reports directly to the Chief Executive Officer and collaborates with the senior leadership team to support the organization’s mission and growth.

Working collaboratively with the entire ALUS team the Finance Director will establish and maintain effective internal controls; prepare and administer the annual budget; manage the cashflow; manage the audit, manage the financial day to day reporting and coordination of finance information; work collaboratively with other members of the Bookkeeping Team, CEO and leadership team to develop and implement policies and programs which will contribute to the organizations success. The Finance Director will collaborate with staff from across the organization; the ideal candidate will have a versatile workstyle and the ability to work well with everyone.

You will also work with different project teams within ALUS as needed. ALUS is an agile organization that relies on everyone’s ability to respond to multiple priorities on an ongoing basis and wants to provide internal professional development opportunities.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Financial Management:

  • Lead the development, implementation, and ongoing management of ALUS’s financial outlook, policies, and procedures.
  • Prepare, analyze, and present budgets, forecasts, and financial reports for internal and external stakeholders.
  • Monitor the organization’s cash flow, investments, and financial risks, providing recommendations for mitigation and improvement.
  • Coordinate annual audits and liaise with external auditors to ensure timely and accurate completion.
  • Support grant management, project funding applications, and reporting requirements, ensuring funds are budgeted, allocated and tracked appropriately.
  • Ensure compliance with all relevant federal and provincial financial regulations, charitable reporting standards, and audit requirements.
  • Process expenses and work to ensure payables go out in a timely fashion.
  • Support the bookkeeper to maintain financial records in a manner that facilitates management reports as well as all reporting to multiple funders.
  • Prepare and file the annual Charity Return T1030 and any other financial regulatory documents.
  • Other applicable tasks that occur while fulfilling the function of the position.

SKILLS, ATTRIBUTES AND EXPERIENCE

  • At least 5 years’ progressive experience in financial management, preferably in the non-profit or environmental sector.
  • Practical understanding of budgets, financial record keeping, and grant reporting.
  • Strong knowledge of Canadian accounting standards for not-for-profit organizations.
  • Outstanding communication skills: outgoing personality with strong written and verbal skills, and a persuasive speaker and excellent listener.
  • Meticulous record keeping.
  • Proficient with the use of relevant software including Microsoft Word, Excel & Teams as well as Quickbooks.
  • Familiarity with Salesforce is a strong asset.
  • Commitment to ALUS’ mission and values.

Bilingualism: ALUS being a national organization, being bilingual, English and French, is a strong asset.

WORKING ENVIRONMENT AND COMPENSATION

  • Normal working hours are Monday to Friday; 35 hours per week, remote.
  • Occasionally, extended hours and weekend work may be required, particularly in April and May to complete financial year-end.
  • Some travel may be required to attend field visits, events, and in-person team meetings.
  • ALUS Canada does not have a centralized office space; The person will work from a home office, which may be located anywhere in Canada with reliable access to high-speed internet and a safe, ergonomic, and private workspace.
  • Employees are provided with a benefits package including health, dental, vision, life insurance, and disability insurance.
  • Salary range: $80k to $95k per year commensurate with experience, education and skill set.
