  • Positions: Habitat and Operations Technicians
  • Employer: Scales Nature Park
  • Location: Scales Nature Park, travel to projects in central and southwestern Ontario may be required
  • Accommodations (shared) may be available on-site (quad or double bunk room).
  • Duration: Varies with position, minimum 8 weeks with extension up to one year internship possible
  • Eligibility Requirement: Must be eligible for federal Youth Employment Strategy- up to 31 years of age
  • Salary: Varies depending on the position and funding. At or slightly above minimum wage.

Duties will vary with the nature of each position, but may include:

  • Participate in the maintenance, repair, planning and development of habitat features, nature trails, bridges, gardens, lawns, challenge course elements, animal enclosures, interpretive facilities, etc.
  • Identify and remove invasive plant species. Organize removal projects for groups of volunteers
  • Participate in firewood splitting, stacking and operating wood burning furnaces
  • Participate in training for the safe operation and maintenance of required tools
  • Operate, maintain and repair various lawn mowers, trimmers, and other outdoor power tools
  • Organize and maintain equipment including hand tools, power tools, etc.
  • Record observations of species at risk if encountered
  • Assist with conducting public engagement and education activities such as guided nature trail walks, etc.
  • Assist with operations such as animal care, outreach programs and field work as required
  • Assist with research projects through habitat or species at risk surveys, data collection, etc. as time allows and according to the interests of the candidate and the needs of the organization
  • Undertake daily operations of the nature centre
  • Assist with scheduling and supervising staff and volunteers
  • Monitor completion of assigned duties and address any emerging needs
  • Assist with the operation of climate control and life support systems including wood fired heating systems and solar power systems, water filtration systems, light cycle timers, humidifiers, etc.
  • Assist with captive husbandry of a collection of ~400 reptiles and amphibians in the nature centre, plus ~350 endangered reptiles under conservation projects for return to the wild, including record-keeping, feeding, cleaning, weighing, diagnostic testing, medicating and other tasks
  • Assist with coordination and delivery of onsite educational programming, including guided tours, birthday parties, school programs, day camps, home school programs, etc.
  • Assist with sorting and storage of donated materials including fruit and vegetables, etc.

Requirements:

  • Able to follow detailed instructions, stay organized, task switch and prioritize conflicting goals
  • Ability to work in a variety of conditions (cold, heat, sun, biting insects, tired volunteers, etc.)
  • Valid class G or G2 driver’s license and good driving record is an asset
  • Oral communication and people skills, time management and leadership skills
  • Experience with a variety of tools and equipment, chainsaw certification is an asset
  • Experience with light construction, landscaping, vehicle maintenance, etc. is an asset
  • Experience driving tractors, excavators or off road vehicles an asset
  • Pesticide Operator License an asset
  • First Aid certification recommended
  • Able to lift up to 23 kg (50 lbs)
  • Flexibility regarding scheduling according to the needs of projects
  • Ability to work and thrive as part of a close-knit team in challenging situations
  • Internal motivation and the ability to work without supervision
  • Positive attitude and passion for the conservation of reptiles and amphibians

Accommodations (shared) may be available on-site (quad or double bunk room).
