  • Position: Reptile Conservation Technicians
  • Organization: Scales Nature Park
  • Location: Scales Nature Park, travel to projects in central and southwestern Ontario may be required
  • Accommodations (shared) may be available on-site or at a field site (quad or double bunk room).
  • Duration: Varies with position, minimum 8 weeks with extension up to one year internship possible
  • Eligibility Requirement: Must be eligible for federal Youth Employment Strategy- up to 31 years of age
  • Salary: Varies depending on the position and funding. At or slightly above minimum wage.

Duties will vary with the nature of each position, but will include:

  • Survey wetlands, water bodies, terrestrial habitats and along roads, day or night in all weather conditions for various turtles, snakes and amphibians to provide data on locations, demographics, habitat usage, morphometrics, predation rates, reproductive output, etc. across a range of habitats and anthropogenic influences within the study area.
  • Complete road surveys for nesting female turtles and monitor them to help with crossing the road; excavate/extract eggs laid in precarious areas to be transported for captive incubation
  • Monitor the reptile hotline, answer calls/texts, assess reports and assign teams to respond, record data
  • Assist with radio tracking of species at risk turtles
  • Release hatchlings into the wild that have been captively hatched at the incubation facility
  • Supervise other staff or volunteers while in the field
  • Ensure data accuracy and completeness on a weekly basis
  • Assist with educational programs about turtles and snakes, and our conservation efforts to increase community engagement, recruit volunteers, etc.
  • Assist with facility operations and maintenance to support and build capacity for conservation work

Requirements:

  • Ability to follow detailed protocols, stay highly organized, task switch and prioritize conflicting goals
  • Flexibility regarding scheduling, proven time management skills
  • High degree of indestructibility and perseverance despite a variety of environmental conditions (cold, heat, sun, biting insects, tired volunteers, etc.)
  • Strong swimming skills (position requires wading, swimming, and paddling in cold water) required
  • Must be willing to hike long distances (up to 10km) with a field pack, able to lift up to 23 kg (50 lbs)
  • Valid class G or G2 driver’s license and good driving record
  • Oral communication and people skills
  • Ability to work and thrive as part of a close-knit team in challenging situations with a positive attitude
  • Internal motivation and the ability to work without supervision
  • Positive attitude and passion for reptiles and their conservation
  • Successful completion of Reptile Boot Camp, or equivalent certification
  • First aid certification is recommended
  • Previous canoeing/paddling experience an asset
