Hiring: Environmental Projects Intern
Organization: Earthwise Society

Earthwise Society is a not-for-profit environmental education organization with demonstration projects for sustainable land use in Tsawwassen and Agassiz BC. We have an opportunity at our Agassiz location for a project coordinator with expertise in local ecosystems and wetlands conservation. Reporting to the Operations Coordinator, the Environmental Projects Intern will be responsible for the following:

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Coordinate habitat stewardship initiatives at Earthwise Agassiz
  • Oversee the implementation of prescribed invasive species controls within the restored wetlands and riparian habitats
  • Recruit and engage community volunteers for on-site habitat restoration activities including planting native plants and trail development and maintenance;
  • Lead teams on habitat stewardship initiatives, provide training and supervision, ensure that safety protocols are followed
  • In consultation with technical team advisors, assist with species monitoring for riparian and wetland restoration sites at Earthwise
  • Collect data for on-site habitat restoration initiatives and maintain records for reporting
  • Plant and maintain plantings within ecological demonstration gardens featuring native and pollinator plants
  • Help increase establishment of native plants within the demonstration gardens; assist with plant propagation for use in home gardens
  • Assist with the delivery of workshops on habitat and ecosystems
  • Be responsible for safe tool and equipment use and maintenance and ensure that storage areas are tidy
  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications:

  • Participation in a post secondary program related to environmental sciences, agriculture, habitat restoration or a similar field
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills; experience with community outreach and environmental education an asset
  • Be self-motivated, flexible; work well independently and in a team environment
  • Be physically fit and enjoy working outside in all kinds of weather
  • Proven ability in working effectively with volunteers and/or co-workers
  • Related project experience

Terms

This is a full time, seasonal position, from mid May through August, with the possibility of extension into the fall, to be paid at the rate of $23/hr. Weekend and occasional evening work will be required. Accommodation at the site may be available.
