Sustainable landscaping, Organic gardening 

Position: Gardener - Educatorr
Project: Earthwise Farm & Garden | Garden
Location: Tsawwassen, Delta, Metro Vancouver BC
Term: seasonal part time to full time position

Earthwise Society is a not for profit, charitable organisation that has been a leader in community-based environmental education for 40 years. The Society operates the Earthwise Garden, a demonstration garden of sustainable landscape practices in South Delta.

Duties & Responsibilities

• Carry out maintenance of the Earthwise Garden to ensure plants are healthy, free of weeds, and the site is attractive to visitors
• Greet garden visitors, answer questions, and provide information on Earthwise Society’s community programs
• Engage new volunteers and lead teams in gardening activities; provide training and education
• Ensure compliance with on site composting to recycle organic waste
• Ensure that plants are receiving adequate water and that irrigation systems are working properly
• Assist with the planning and delivery of special events at the Earthwise Garden including the Plant Sale, Tomato Festival, garden tours and others
• Assist with the delivery of educational programs for students, including Ecotours
• Assist with the delivery of seniors programs including Garden Buddies program
• Ensure that equipment is well maintained and available when needed
• Help with Earthwise Society’s food security programs
• Other duties as assigned

Qualifications:

• Post secondary education in horticulture, botany, or environmental fields, and/or
• Experience related to organic gardening, ecological landscaping etc
• Knowledge of composting and organic practices
• Strong horticultural knowledge including plant id of native plants and local ecosystems
• Experience in delivering hands on garden related workshops for children or adults
• Strong communication and interpersonal skills;
• Experience with community outreach is an asset
• Be self-motivated, flexible, and work well both independently and in a team environment
• Be physically fit and enjoy working outside in all kinds of weather
• Proven ability in working effectively with volunteers and/or co-workers

Notes:

This is a seasonal part time to full time position based at the Earthwise Garden in Tsawwassen. Weekend work will be required. The rate of pay will be $20-$22 per hour (based on experience), 21 - 35 hours per week starting the week of April 13.
