Summary

Oceana Canada was established as an independent charity in 2015 and is part of the largest international advocacy group dedicated solely to ocean conservation. Oceana Canada has successfully campaigned to end the shark fin trade, make rebuilding depleted fish populations the law, improve the way fisheries are managed and protect marine habitat.

Canada has the longest coastline in the world, with an ocean surface area of 7.1 million square kilometres, or 70 per cent of its landmass. Oceana Canada believes that Canada has a national and global obligation to manage our natural resources responsibly and help ensure a sustainable source of protein for the world’s growing population. Oceana Canada works with civil society, academics, fishers, Indigenous Peoples and governments to return Canada’s formerly vibrant oceans to health and abundance. Oceana Canada seeks a Fisheries Analyst to support its campaigns to rebuild fisheries and safeguard forage fish. A significant portion of the work will support the development of Oceana Canada’s Fishery Audit. The position requires strong quantitative research abilities and science communication skills.

Principal duties and responsibilities

• Lead data gathering and synthesis by conducting comprehensive literature reviews and analyzing government reports, management plans, scientific publications, and other relevant sources to inform the 10th annual Fishery Audit (2026) and related Oceana Canada initiatives.
• Design, build, and conduct analytical assessments of existing and emerging fisheries indicators, including the development of new datasets, metrics, and evidence-based insights to evaluate the status and management performance of Canadian fisheries.
• Produce high‑quality written materials, including technical analyses, reports, briefing notes, and policy recommendations, with exceptional accuracy, clarity, and attention to detail.
• Provide research and analytical support to advance Oceana Canada’s fisheries and marine conservation campaigns, contributing scientific expertise to strategic planning, advocacy initiatives, and public‑facing materials as assigned.
• Work with a multidisciplinary team consisting of advocates, communications professionals, scientists, lawyers and others to achieve ambitious annual and longer-term campaign goals
• Support the organizing of convening events including drafting scientific resources and discussion papers for those attending.
• Keep up to date on best fisheries and conservation practices, methodologies and innovations.
• Perform additional duties as needed or assigned.

Requirements

• Graduate degree in a relevant scientific field (e.g., fisheries science, marine biology, ecology, environmental science) with practical experience in fisheries research, data analysis, or marine resource management.
• Demonstrated expertise in fisheries science, stock assessment concepts, and marine conservation issues in a Canadian or international context.
• Advanced quantitative and statistical abilities, including experience building, managing, and analyzing large or complex datasets using analytical tools or statistical software (Excel, R.).
• Exceptional writing, editing, and communication skills, with the ability to translate scientific information into clear and compelling narratives for technical and non‑technical audiences.
• Must be eligible and available for full‑time employment in Canada.

Temporary fixed-term contract with an expected start date of April 27, 2026. The expected duration for this role is April 27, 2026 to December 18, 2026.
