About Mind Your Plastic:
Mind Your Plastic is a national charity dedicated to eliminating plastic pollution by working with municipalities, businesses, and educational institutions. We focus on creating lasting partnerships, advocating for policy changes, and engaging communities to achieve our vision of Plastic-Free Land and Seas.
Role Overview:
The Executive Director is responsible for the leadership and management of Mind Your Plastic. The Executive Director's main goal is to achieve tangible results by reducing plastic usage and waste through education and awareness-raising that changes behavior and contributes to culture change. This position is responsible for overseeing the administration, programs and strategic plan of the organization. Other key duties include fundraising, marketing, and community outreach. They will set a long-term vision and elevate the organization's impact and brand awareness locally, nationally and internationally.

Key Responsibilities:
Operational Planning and Management
- Develop an annual operational plan which incorporates goals and objectives that work towards the strategic direction of Mind Your Plastic
- Ensure that the operation of Mind Your Plastic meets the expectations of the Board, funders, and the community
- Oversee the efficient and effective day-to-day operation of Mind Your Plastic
- Draft policies for the approval of the Board and review existing policies on an annual basis; recommend changes to the Board as appropriate
- Ensure that personnel, client, donor and volunteer files are securely stored and privacy/confidentiality is maintained
Financial Planning and Management
- Work with the Treasurer to prepare a comprehensive budget for the approval of the Board
- Administer the funds of Mind Your Plastic according to the approved budget and monitor the monthly cash flow of the organization
- In cooperation with the Treasurer, provide the Board with regular reports on the revenues and expenditures of Mind Your Plastic
- Maintain relationships with funding sources and prepare funding proposals
- Identify, prioritize, and provide advice and counsel to aid Board in accessing potential fundraising alternatives
- Ensure that Mind Your Plastic complies with all legislation
Program Planning and Management
- Monitor programs and services to ensure alignment with the mission and goals of Mind Your Plastic
- Monitor community needs on an ongoing basis and develop programs and services consistent with those needs
- Evaluate programs and services regularly and provide recommendations to the Board for changes and improvements

Community Relations
- Initiate and develop relationships with a broad range of community sectors, including all levels of government, businesses, and other nonprofit organizations
- Undertake activities within the community that enhance the visibility of Mind Your Plastic
- Develop and provide information about Mind Your Plastic’s goals, programs, and services
Human Resources Planning and Management
- Ensure appropriate staffing consistent with community needs and within the constraints of Mind Your Plastic's financial resources
- Develop and maintain appropriate job descriptions for all staff, as well as appropriate personnel policies and procedures
- Establish a positive, healthy, and safe work environment in accordance with all appropriate legislation and regulations
- Recruit, select, orient, and train all staff
- Implement a performance management process for all staff including monitoring staff performance on an on-going basis and conducting an annual performance review
- Coach and mentor staff to improve performance and discipline staff members using appropriate techniques
- Recruit, monitor, and guide all volunteers and develop appreciation initiatives to recognize the contribution of volunteers
Governance/Board Support
- Participate with the Board in developing a vision and strategic plan for Mind Your Plastic
- Act as a professional advisor to the Board on all aspects of Mind Your Plastic's activities
- Identify, assess, and inform the Board of internal and external issues that affect Mind Your Plastic
- Bring all appropriate policy decisions to the Board in a timely manner
- Assist in organizing Board meetings and assist in preparing necessary materials and reports; attend and participate in Board meetings
- Foster an atmosphere of open communication and teamwork between the Board and the staff of Mind Your Plastic
Risk Management
- Identify and evaluate the risks to Mind Your Plastic's people (visitors, staff, managers, volunteers), property, finances, goodwill, and implement measures to control these risks
- Ensure that the Board of Directors and the organization carries appropriate and adequate insurance coverage
- Ensure that the Board and staff understand the terms, conditions, and limitations of the insurance coverage
