Position: Swimmable Waters Data Assistant (Toronto)
Organization: Swim Drink Fish Canada

  • Location: Primarily work from home (anywhere in the GTA), with travel to various sites across Ontario, and check-ins at our office as required. For the right candidate we *may* consider a different location.
  • Position Type: 18-week contract, 37.5 hours/week. Occasional evening and weekend work may be required. One position available.
  • Eligibility: age 30 & under (see below)

Swim Drink Fish Canada is a charity dedicated to ensuring swimmable, drinkable, fishable water for everyone. By using community science and storytelling, we inspire millions of people to know and safeguard their waters. We have teams across Canada.

Swim Drink Fish is always looking to grow its movement of passionate water stewards. We need someone to help us manage our Swim Guide app and the data and information for more than 8,000 beaches in 11 countries.

Job Description

The Swimmable Waters Data Assistant will work with our Technology team to ensure beach water quality information on Swim Guide is accurate and up-to-date and assist with the Blue Flag program. You will be reporting to our Manager of Technology and Innovation and working alongside other staff and volunteers. We work as a team and are always willing to help each other.

This is primarily a work-from-home position. Reliable internet access is important.

Here’s what you need to do…

  • Connect with Swim Guide partners across North America through phone and email.
  • Enter water quality data into our Swim Guide app, ensuring accuracy
  • Add new sites to our Swim Guide database
  • Research and write beach descriptions for new beaches
  • Manage and update beach and water quality information
  • Respond to community inquiries
  • Respond to any technical questions or comments from Swim Guide users and affiliates
  • Assist with online communications, including blog and social media
  • Analyze and report on user data through GIS products
  • Assist with the Blue Flag Program, which may include site visits, among other tasks
  • Assist with Swim Drink Fish outreach and engagement events as needed
  • Assist with other Swim Drink Fish initiatives as required

Here’s what you need to have…

  • Excellent social and communication skills
  • A passion for water stewardship and conservation
  • Attention to detail (this role includes a lot of data entry)
  • Experience working collaboratively with a team
  • A post-secondary background in science, environmental studies or a related discipline
  • Be motivated and able to work independently

Bonus points if you…

  • Are a map person with GIS experience
  • Love data and spreadsheets
  • Love helping people take long walks on the beach
  • Know (or have now googled) what Beach Action Values (BAVs) are
  • Love the water!
