About Transition Salt Spring

Transition Salt Spring (TSS) is a volunteer-led community organization working on local climate action, ecosystem protection, affordable housing, food security, and local governance.

We work closely with community partners, local government, and Island residents to advance practical, place-based solutions. 2026 is a pivotal year. A local government election in October coincides with a once-in-a-generation review of the Islands Trust Official Community Plan (OCP) – the document that shapes land use, housing, and environmental protection on Salt Spring for years to come.

The Role

We’re looking for a capable, creative, self-directed communications and campaigns professional to help us execute our campaign strategy before, through, and into the months that follow the October election.

This is a hands-on role spanning four main areas: campaign communications, community engagement, post-election OCP advocacy, and the launch of a public Climate Action Report Card. You’ll work closely with our Advocacy Circle – an experienced group of community volunteers – and help coordinate activities. We have the strategy and tools in place; we need someone to drive execution.

What You’ll Be Doing

  • Campaign communications: producing and editing content across digital, social, print, and earned media channels, and keeping our messaging consistent and on schedule
  • Community engagement: coordinating and staffing public events, surveys, and outreach, and supporting our volunteer network
  • OCP advocacy: carrying our communications efforts into the post-election phase, translating policy positions into accessible public-facing materials
  • Report Card launch: writing and coordinating communications around the public release of our Climate Action Report Card

What We’re Looking For

Essential

  • Demonstrated experience writing, editing, and managing communications across channels for a community-facing organization
  • Strong, adaptable writing – able to move between long-form persuasive pieces, plain-language public content, and platform-appropriate formats (social, newsletter, web)
  • Project coordination skills and the self-direction to manage multiple workstreams with light supervision
  • Comfort with digital tools: social media platforms, email/newsletter tools, WordPress or similar CMS, shared documents and other digital tools
  • Sound judgement and discretion, especially around politically sensitive and election-period work

Strong assets

  • Familiarity with Salt Spring Island, the Islands Trust, the CRD, the OCP process, and local government
  • Experience with community organizing, public engagement, or campaign communications
  • Comfort working with data and complex issues and communicating clearly with a variety of audiences
  • Media relations experience
  • Graphic design skills (an asset – design support is available)

You’ll thrive here if you are practical and execution-focused, have strong digital and people skills, work well within lean resources and a distributed team, care about climate and community resilience, and are comfortable wearing several hats in a small, collaborative, volunteer-driven organization.

Working Arrangements

  • 15 - 20 hours per week, averaged over the term, with flexibility around busy periods
  • Part-time position
  • You provide your own computer and workspace, but will also work in the office at times
  • Term runs July 15 to Dec 31, 2026, with possibility of extension

How to Apply

Please send a short cover note, your resume, and one or two relevant writing or communications samples to chris@transitionsaltspring.com by Tuesday, July 7, 2026. Ensure these are delivered in one combined PDF document. Transition Salt Spring welcomes applicants of all backgrounds. We are committed to reconciliation and to building an inclusive community.
