Position Description

WWF-Canada has worked in the Wolastoq (Saint John River) Watershed for over a decade to support healthy ecosystems and resilient communities. The Associate Specialist, Ecosystem Restoration will support the planning, delivery, and evaluation of restoration and stewardship initiatives in the Wolastoq region consistent with WWF-Canada's Strategic Plan and regional priorities.

The Associate Specialist will contribute to on-the-ground project delivery, partner coordination, research, monitoring, communications, and community engagement to ensure restoration initiatives are working towards complex terrestrial and freshwater ecosystems for wildlife and carbon storage. This role will also require planning community events and support WWF-Canada initiatives such as seed orchard and large-scale ecological restoration.

Key Responsibilities

• Support the delivery, outreach, monitoring, evaluation, and stewardship of restoration initiatives in the Wolastoq region, ensuring effective mechanisms are in place to measure restoration impact.
• Strengthen and maintain partnerships and relationships with Indigenous communities, native plant growers, community groups, research institutions, government agencies and others that are interested or active in restoration related activities.
• Support the integration of Indigenous knowledge and practice as it relates to rebuilding complex ecosystems.
• Contribute to storytelling, communications, and outreach for work in the Wolastoq.
• Coordinate logisitics for meetings, workshops, field activities, site visits, and community events.
• Assist with financial tracking, including budgeting, expense monitoring, and preparing information for reports and funding proposals.
• Collaborate with internal teams to support coordinated program delivery.
• Organize and maintain project records, documentation, and digital files to support efficient program operations.
• Assist the Restoration & Regeneration team, as required, with other related duties contributing to the mandate and successful operation of the department and organization.

What We Are Looking For

• 1+ year related experience in ecosystem restoration, conservation, environmental stewardship or similar.
• Related post-secondary education in zoology, biology, ecology, or similar field preferred OR an additional 2+ years of related work experience in aforementioned areas.
• Knowledge of freshwater and terrestrial ecosystems, restoration practices, and community-based conservation.
• Understanding of conservation challenges and opportunities in the Wolastoq region.
• Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively within a team environment, take direction, and showing initiative while contribute proactively to shared goals
• Strong organizational skills for and coordination skills, with experience supporting workshops, events, field activities, or project logistics.
• Clear and effective communication skills, both written and verbal, including the ability to communicate scientific and technical information to diverse audiences.
• Strong problem-solving skills, time management, and multitasking abilities, with comfort managing multiple priorities in a dynamic environment.
• Familiarity with data collection, GIS, and ecological monitoring an asset.
• Familiarity with data sovereignty guidelines an asset.
• Bilingual in French and/or proficiency in a local indigenous language considered an asset.
• Knowledge of the Wolastoq region, Indigenous history, political environment, terrestrial and freshwater ecosystems and environmental history considered an asset.

Other Information

• Hybrid role requiring the individual to work in office 1 day per week in Fredericton, with occasional local travel expected in the Wolastoq region to meet with partners, and attend or lead community engagement activities.
• Occasional local and national travel will be required to attend meetings and/or events.
