About Biinaagami

Biinaagami is an Indigenous-guided initiative that connects learners of all ages to the lands and waters of the Great Lakes–St. Lawrence watershed. The project was shaped by a Shared Circle of Indigenous voices and continues to be guided through a two-eyed seeing approach, braiding both Indigenous and non-Indigenous ways of knowing. The initiative includes an education program with a giant floor map that travels to classrooms across the country, ongoing storytelling that reaches millions of readers through the Canadian Geographic magazine and an active outreach program that engages hundreds of thousands of people each year.

The Opportunity

We are seeking a creative and experienced  Digital Marketing Strategist to join our small, but mighty team.

The Digital Marketing Strategist, with support from the Biinaagami team, will help increase the Biinaagami audience, highlight member activities and impact, and build awareness of our shared responsibility to care for the waters throughout the world’s largest freshwater ecosystem. They will engage in the development of communication strategies and lead the advance of digital visibility on our website and social media channels. They will also continue to facilitate in-person engagements and develop relationships with the wider non-profit and charitable sector, including current and prospective members, sponsors, funders and other partners, policymakers and other influencers.

This role is ideal for a communications professional with a passion for digital engagement, a drive for learning and progressive professional growth, and interest in working in a highly collaborative and creative team. The Digital Marketing Strategist will report to the Director of Water and Land Relations for Canadian Geographic, and work cross-functionally with the entire Biinaagami team.

This is a FT, one-year contract with a salary range ($60,000-$70,000 per year) to commensurate with experience. We are open to a candidate who is very efficient and experienced and is interested in working part-time.

Candidate Profile

The ideal candidate will be a creative, strategic and organized team player who thrives in today’s fast-paced and competitive media landscape, with a keen sense of how to engage with diverse audiences. Preference will be given to candidates with experience in organizing, digital engagement and marketing. Persons with lived Indigenous experience and/or writing from a two-eyed seeing lens will be highly regarded. Experience capturing video and creating content for social media platforms will be an asset. This position will require the successful candidate to travel within the Great Lakes-St. Lawrence watershed and will occasionally involve work outside of regular business hours.

Ideally, the successful candidate will be living anywhere within the Great Lakes-St. Lawrence watershed, with office space available at Canadian Geographic’s headquarters in Ottawa if desired. Candidates who prefer working from home must have a reliable working space with phone, computer and internet access.

Qualifications

  • Degree or diploma in communications or digital marketing or equivalent experience.
  • 3+ years of recent experience in digital communications, marketing and project management.
  • Experienced in developing, implementing, tracking, and reporting on strategic comms plans targeted for awareness and growth.
  • Resourceful professional with penchant for collaboration and inspiring team members, and delivering high-calibre work with limited supervision.
  • Strong writing, editing, and storytelling skills, and experience producing visual presentations.
  • Proficiency in communications/reporting tools and platforms, including: WordPress, Google Analytics, Meta Business Suite, Meta Ads Manager, Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn, and Tik Tok.
  • Creative, collaborative, and interested in demonstrating initiative and project leadership.
  • Experience working or collaborating with diverse populations.
  • Fully proficient professional English-French bilingualism is strongly preferred.
  • Willingness to travel around the watershed, candidates with a drivers license are strongly preferred.
  • Must be legally entitled to work in Canada.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the development and implementation of a new communications and marketing strategy for Biinaagami, managing team engagement and deliverables.
  • Develop and implement social media strategies, including specific campaigns for harmful pollutants and the multi-year Great Lakes Art exhibit.
  • Pursue collaborations and opportunities to get Biinaagami in front of diverse and large audiences and grow the Biinaagami Great Lakes-St Lawrence community.
  • Ensure consistent application of the Biinaagami brand guidelines, messaging, and accessibility standards for all communications via website, social media and traditional media. Create a media kit for Biinaagami.
  • Manage website engagement and SEO, troubleshoot technical issues with third-party contractors and respond to public inquiries via the website.
  • Utilize Google Analytics and other tools across our website and social media channels to track KPIs, generate reports to inform strategy and optimize user experience.
  • Support organizational operations by tracking communication budgets, contributing to grant proposals and reporting to funders.
  • Provide administrative assistance to the Director and Shared Circle Chair.
