About the role of Organizing Coordinator

As part of our Organizing team (currently made up of the director and two staff organizers), you will be responsible for volunteer engagement and event coordination in the Victoria area. You’ll support our South Island volunteer team and work with allies to push our province beyond fossil fuels and act in solidarity with Indigenous people and communities on the frontlines of the climate crisis.

In this role, you will:

• Recruit and retain new volunteers by identifying outreach opportunities, putting volunteers on a path to participation, and developing engagement and skill-building opportunities.
• Lead actions and events in the region as needed, including planning, coordination with allies, volunteer recruitment, action/event design and execution.
• Support the South Island volunteer team, by convening and training team members to lead events and projects (e.g. canvassing, actions, recruitment calling), and delivering core tasks as a backstop as necessary.
• Develop relationships with allies and values-aligned groups and constituencies in the region, including Indigenous communities; and identify opportunities for collaboration, solidarity and volunteer learning.

To be considered for this position, you need to:

• Have 1-2 years experience in field organizing, volunteer coordination or community engagement in a leadership or coordination role.
• Have a track record of building relationships with, and inspiring participation from, people of diverse backgrounds, ages, identities and abilities.
• Be able to hold a room, as demonstrated through prior experience with public speaking, delivering workshops, teaching or similar group-leading activities.
• Be a self-starter: comfortable designing much of your own work-plan, adapting to a frequently changing task list, prioritizing among competing demands and managing your own time as part of a distributed/remote team.
• Be comfortable with digital and virtual tools for collaborating with co-workers and supporting volunteer engagement, such as Nationbuilder, Salesforce, peer-to-peer texting, Zoom, Google suite.
• Be committed to Dogwood’s mission to decolonize, decarbonize and democratize B.C.

Additional experience and skills

Other personal strengths, knowledge, lived experience, training or aptitudes in these areas would be considered additional assets in this role and we encourage you to highlight them in your application.

• Ability to design and produce written and visual materials (eg. hand-outs, props, signs).
• Enthusiasm for learning on the job and experimenting with evolving approaches to organizing.
• Existing connections to community-based groups and networks in the South Island region.
• Curiosity and openness to decolonization including personal learning, Indigenous solidarity and/or anti-oppression work.

Physical requirements

This position requires continuous hours of work at a computer (most days); meetings with volunteers and allies at locations around Victoria (average 2-5 per month); and attending in-person events that may require continuous hours of standing or walking, and lifting/carrying materials and equipment (average 1 per month, with some busier months).

Work arrangements

Dogwood offers a flexible, rewarding and unionized work environment including four weeks paid vacation starting in your first year; health, dental and paramedical benefits; and a baseline 30-hour work week. Some evening and weekend work is required. While the successful candidate should live in the South Island region, the position could be primarily remote, primarily based in Dogwood’s Victoria office, or hybrid.
