Job Summary:

This role is responsible for shaping and producing clear, compelling communications that support Living Lakes Canada’s programs, strengthen brand visibility, and build relationships with media, government, partners, and supporters.

The Communications Lead serves as the organization’s primary writer and communications integrator, working closely with program leads across approximately ten active initiatives. The role also provides supervision to two 0.25 FTE Communications Assistants.

This is a manager-level role for someone who combines strategic thinking with hands-on execution and is comfortable working independently within a collaborative nonprofit team.

The role offers stability and the opportunity to grow into broader leadership responsibilities as the organization evolves.

Key Responsibilities:

Strategic & Program Communications

  • Develop and implement an integrated communications approach aligned with Living Lakes’ strategic priorities
  • Provide communications support across approximately ten active programs
  • Draft, edit, and execute the design and layout of press releases, blogs, newsletters, website content, impact stories, and reports
  • Support program launches, campaigns, and event communications
  • Ensure messaging is consistent, accurate, and aligned with Living Lakes’ brand
  • Manage and curate Living Lakes’ photo and video libraries

Social Media & Digital Presence

  • Develop channel-appropriate messaging and campaigns across Living Lakes’ social media channels, including regular content and paid ads
  • Track engagement metrics and refine approach as needed
  • Curate and update website content (WordPress) and manage email marketing campaigns

Media & External Relations

  • Draft media materials and respond to inquiries
  • Pitch story ideas and build relationships with media contacts
  • Direct media requests and support Living Lakes Canada staff in preparing for interviews
  • Maintain and update media contact lists
  • Support leadership in drafting op-eds and key messaging

Fundraising & Development Collaboration

  • Collaborate with leadership and program leads on donor communications
  • Draft and support seasonal individual donor appeals
  • Contribute to grant narrative sections and funder impact reporting
  • Support the development of corporate engagement materials

Brand Stewardship & Quality Control

  • Maintain and uphold Living Lakes’ branding and messaging guidelines
  • Collaborate with program leads to ensure partner and funder branding commitments are met
  • Coordinate external communications support when specialized expertise is required

Supervision

  • Provide oversight and task coordination for two 0.25 FTE Communications Assistants

Qualifications:

  • 3+ years of experience in communications (non-profit experience preferred)
  • Exceptional writing and editing skills
  • Ability to translate scientific or environmental content into accessible language
  • Proficiency in Canva and WordPress
  • Additional design software experience an asset (e.g. Adobe InDesign, Lightroom)
  • Experience managing social media channels and digital engagement (experience with Meta Ads an asset)
  • Experience with CRM and email marketing platforms
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple priorities
  • Collaborative, self-directed, and detail-oriented
  • Commitment to Living Lakes Canada’s mission
  • A Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person to whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act for the duration of the employment
  • Have a valid Social Insurance Number at the start of employment and be legally entitled to work in Canada in accordance with relevant provincial or territorial legislation and regulations
