Position: Communications & Membership Coordinator
Organization: National Farmers Union
Location: Can work from the national office in Saskatoon or remotely from home

The National Farmers Union (NFU) is an organization of and for farmers and farmworkers in Canada, working together to democratically achieve agricultural policies that ensure dignity and income security for farmers and farmworkers while protecting and enhancing rural environments for future generations. www.nfu.ca

The NFU is seeking expertise to manage communications for policy, advocacy campaigns, membership mobilization and recruitment and general organizational needs. The Communications and Membership Coordinator will continue the development of a communications strategy to optimize the NFU’s impact in the rapidly changing communications space and political context. They are keen to work with farmer and farm worker members, leaders, and policy staff to communicate in effective ways to build the NFU movement. This job will involve general NFU communications and organizing and will require balancing external and internal communications.

The Role & Responsibilities

The Communications and Membership Coordinator’s responsibilities include the following:

  • With the NFU policy team and leadership, help synthesize and effectively communicate NFU policy for informing and for organizing
  • Work with farmers from across the country to strategically implement advocacy campaigns
  • Integrate national and regional policy / communications
  • Provide logistics and communications support for NFU leaders, other staff, and the membership ctte in relation to membership retention and organizing campaigns
  • Working with NFU leaders and staff to publish press releases, ensuring professional translation for simultaneous English and French publication for national releases
  • Working with NFU leadership, edit and publish the bi-annual Union Farmer print publication
  • Maintain digital communications including publications, appropriate NFU social media platforms, and NFU website content with appropriate translation
  • Work with partners, members and allies for effective outreach
  • Continue the development of a Communications Strategy

Reporting

The Communications and Membership Coordinator reports to the NFU Executive Director.

Working Conditions

  • 32-hour work week, with occasional evening and weekend work required; these hours can be worked as a 4-day work week
  • Salary: $52,000 + benefits + 3 weeks vacation annually prorated to start date
  • Work from the national office in Saskatoon or remotely
  • Attendance at the annual national convention required

Skills

The Communications and Membership Coordinator will have:

  • A background in applied communications through schooling and/or experience
  • A background in membership organizing within a union or membership-based nonprofit
  • Experience planning and implementing effective campaigns
  • Systems thinking and project management
  • Understanding of agricultural issues
  • Knowledge of and interest in socio-political issues and challenges facing farmers and farm workers, agricultural policy solutions, organizing, agroecology and food sovereignty
  • Ability to apply critical analysis to complex issues
  • Proficiency in online communications including Action Network, WordPress, video editing, and social media
  • Excellent listening, writing and speaking skills in English
  • French written fluency is considered a very strong asset
  • Direct experience of Canadian farming is a strong asset
