Position: Communications and Outreach Coordinator
Organization: Our Community Bikes
Location: Vancouver BC. Hybrid, work from home with one day a week at the shop. Some evening and weekends required.

Permanent Full Time

Our Community Bikes promotes the use of bicycles as a healthy, affordable and environmentally sound form of transportation. We offer education in mechanical skills to empower people and to enable their access to community services and opportunities. We do this through four main programs; (1) Our Community Bikes store front, cycling education resource centre, and full service shop social enterprise, (2) Bike Club youth program which provides maintenance and riding opportunities, (3) Pedals for the People which provides free bikes, parts, and repairs for people who face financial barriers, and (4) Gear-Up, a youth employment training program.

Summary of Position

Our Community Bikes is hiring a Communications and Outreach Coordinator to elevate our voice and strengthen our brand and connections in the community. This role is highly strategic and collaborative while also being boots on the ground. Bringing new ideas and approaches is expected. Being open, receptive, and communicative are highly valued in order to create a safer space for positively empowering members of our community. This position reports to the Executive Director and will work closely with the Shop Manager and other OCB staff. This is a hybrid role with the expectation to work at the shop one day per week and be in person for events, meetings, and other duties as needed (across Metro-Vancouver).

Responsibilities:

Communications 50%

  • Design and implement marketing and communications strategy and plans;
  • Maintain, upkeep, and modernize communication systems;
  • Track analytics and measure the impact and effectiveness of communication activities;
  • Write press releases and manage media relations;
  • Compile newsletters, creating content and graphics;
  • Support other communication activities (e.g. social media, blog, etc);
  • Design and update online promotional material, printable posters and brochures;

Outreach 50%

  • Coordinate Events:
    • Plan and prepare for events (e.g. liaise with volunteers to ensure adequate event support, gather supplies, check & prepare event briefs, help maintain event kit, invite media when applicable);

    • Represent OCB at events, transport materials, capture and record event stats;

    • Follow up on event inquiries, issue quotes, book events, and prepare invoices;

  • Collect, review, and follow up on event feedback;
  • Conduct outreach to both maintain existing, and gain new collaboration & event partners;
  • Work with Program Coordinators to assist with marketing, promotion and outreach to grow existing programs;

General

  • Promptly respond to internal and external communication and follow through to ensure desired outcomes;
  • Participate in staff communication through the 'Slack' interface;
  • Use various Point of Sale systems;
  • Attend monthly staff meetings, and other committee meetings;
  • Navigate google drive to find resources including, but not limited to meeting agendas, policies and procedures, monthly schedules, timesheets, and meeting notes;
  • Comply with Pedal policies and procedures;
  • Other duties as required.

Required Qualifications:

  • Strong communication, customer service and people skills;
  • Commitment to supporting our mission and strengthening our organization through communication and outreach;
  • Strong writing, proofreading, and graphic design skills, a keen eye for detail;
  • Advanced organizational skills and ability to prioritize while managing multiple projects;
  • Self-motivated, competent, confident and empathetic;
  • Ability to work collaboratively with colleagues, youth, and volunteers;
  • Ability to multi-task in a loud, busy, and demanding (but fun!) environment;
  • Ability to advise on bike related questions and undertake roadside bike repairs;
  • Clear interest in and understanding of anti-oppression framework.

Assets

  • Experience working in a communications role;
  • Experience with bicycle mechanics;
  • Familiarity with Mailchimp, Canva, and Square software systems;
  • Proficiency with Google Suite.

Payscale:

$27.71 to $34.35/hr commensurate with experience and organizational tenure. 32-35 hours per week. Some evening and weekend hours are expected. Health benefits, cost share, after 6 months.
