Carpenter – Job Posting

Position: Intermediate Carpenter
Employer: Seed the North, Inc.
Location: This is an on-site position. We will assist with relocation to Hazelton, BC / or commute from Smithers or Terrace BC

Seed the North is an architect-led ecological restoration company located on a beautiful 160 acre property above the Skeena River, with dramatic views of Stekyoden Peak. Construction of our seed orchard and campus began in 2020. Our context is rural and remote. We work with local craftspeople and locally sourced timber, from harvesting to finishing. We seek beauty in simplicity, with occasional flourishes and eccentricities. Some of our smaller projects lean toward a “Builders of the Pacific Coast” aesthetic, while the larger ones bring together the local timber frame building culture with industrial minimalism. Wood and structural expression feature in all of our projects.

Hourly rate: $33 - $38 CAD

Workload: Permanent, full time, flexible schedule but minimum 160 hours every 4 weeks, i.e. 10 hours x 4 times per week. This is a long term position requiring a commitment of working 10-12 months per year.

Pay structure: bi-weekly payroll

Experience / Required Skills / Qualifications

We are looking for an all-rounder who is curious and confident across all phases of construction

  • 5+ solid years of relevant experience
  • Love for wood, and a portfolio to match
  • Strong aesthetic sensibility and experience executing design details
  • Bring the project to completion in the time allocated: demonstrate you are a 'finisher'
  • Strong experience with light-frame wood construction is required; heavy timber experience is an asset
  • Some experience with finishing carpentry, furniture, and millwork is desirable

Job Description

We are hiring an intermediate carpenter to put the finishing touches on a three-storey architectural cabin, followed by the above-ground construction of a four-unit Group Cabin (aka Research Station) with accommodations for university collaborators, events, and seasonal team members in the style of a Finnish summer house. Our team of architects, carpenters, local contractors, suppliers and fabricators are ready to support you. Services and foundations were completed last year and wood construction will begin this summer. We will provide a complete set of construction drawings. While it is possible to commute from Smithers or Terrace, residing in Hazelton is preferred and we will support you in this endeavor. The ideal candidate will enjoy living and working in a rural and remote environment, and may enjoy nearby world-class hiking, paddling, fishing, hunting, running, mountain biking and skiing.

  • Thrive in a 3-5 person team environment
  • Move the build confidently forward / make decisions / know when to consult
  • Work independently and take direction to varying degrees based on your work style
  • Ability to provide effective and efficient direction to a helper
  • Work with locally sourced wood from small-scale sawmills; and
  • Work with furniture-grade wood in a professional wood shop
  • Assist in daily logistics at the work site
  • Manage fabrication processes, read shop drawings
  • Find creative ways to solve carpentry and logistical challenges
  • Light drafting / casual onsite drawings in order to communicate your carpentry process an asset
