Architectural Designer

Position: Senior Architectural Designer (Remote)
Company: Seed the North, Inc.
Location: remote in British Columbia

Seed the North is an architect-led ecological restoration company located in northern British Columbia. Construction of our Seed Orchard and Campus is underway, and we are seeking an experienced designer to join our small team. We are located on a beautiful 160 acre property above the Skeena River, with dramatic views of Stekyoden Peak.

Our context is rural and remote. We work with local craftspeople and locally sourced timber, from harvesting to finishing. We seek beauty in simplicity, with occasional flourishes and eccentricities. Some of our smaller projects lean toward a “Builders of the Pacific Coast” aesthetic, while the larger ones bring together the local timber frame building culture with industrial minimalism. Wood and structural expression feature in all of our projects. We hope to find a designer with a curiosity and appreciation for these kinds of buildings.

We operate under a design-build model. More than half of our construction team is in-house, and your designs will be developed hand-in-hand with our builders. You may spend one day engaged in campus-wide space planning, and the next preparing shop drawings for immediate fabrication. We hope to find a designer who possesses a “joy for the buildable.” We are looking for an all-rounder who is confident across scales, with a strong will for self-driven research when solving a problem that we have not encountered before.

This position requires an independent mindset while also being highly collaborative with excellent communication skills. Regular video and email collaboration with engineers, craftspeople, architects, vendors, project managers, founder, and lead designer will be required; however, most time will be spent working independently.

This position is remote, flexible, and paid hourly. Our design team is distributed across the continent. You will report to the Lead Designer, based in Montreal. Being local to Montreal is an asset. You must be located in North America (for time zone and travel purposes). Seed the North is seasonal by nature. This permanent position is full time for 6-9 months per year (negotiable). It will suit someone who has seasonal interests or passion projects during the rest of the year. Our busy season for design and construction is typically from January to September.

Location: Remote work, trips to work site
Hourly rate: $45-$50 CAD

  • Workload: Permanent, full time, for 6-9 months per year. 35-45 hours per week, flexible work week.
  • Pay structure: Bi-weekly payroll (contract-basis may be possible if preferred)
  • Equipment: We will provide necessary software. Candidate to provide their own computer and work environment.
  • Travel: Paid travel with accommodations and per diem, as needed. Travel is to Seed the North campus.
  • Extras: Full-time positions offer paid holidays, paid time off (8% vacation earnings), flexible unpaid time off (if desired), professional development allowance, and annual bonus opportunities.
