Vancouver Parks – Volunteer Positions

Role: Beachkeeper
Organization: Metro Vancouver Regional Parks
Location: təmtəmíxʷtən/Belcarra Regional Park, Picnic Area (near the ocean) and wharf (near Port Moody & Coquitlam, Metro Vancouver BC)

Promote awareness, conservation and stewardship of the marine ecosystem at təmtəmíxʷtən/Belcarra Regional Park and in the community.

Volunteers will:

  • Encourage preservation and protection of marine ecosystems by engaging park visitors with hands-on, interactive educational displays, props and activities
  • Work to collect base line information on the impact of recreational fishing on local crab populations at the təmtəmíxʷtən/Belcarra Regional Park wharf; this information is analyzed by Fisheries and Oceans for fisheries management purposes

Duties include:

  • Set up and take down displays on the wharf and in the information tent
  • Engage wharf and park users in activities that will increase their awareness of beach and park etiquette, fisheries regulations, intertidal conservation and natural history
  • Participate in the crab study (trapping, handling, and data collection)
  • Advise visitors of park rules and regulations (as needed and when comfortable to do so)
  • Develop new displays, pamphlets and signs for Beachkeepers (optional)

Qualifications – Volunteers must:

  • Be at least 16
  • Have enthusiasm and a positive attitude
  • Be willing to engage with and to educate the public
  • Have a keen interest in marine ecology and natural history
  • Be reliable and motivated
  • Be able to work both independently and with a team
  • Feel comfortable handling live intertidal marine life

Time commitment:

  • A minimum of 6 weekend shifts (approximately 30 hours) throughout the summer, from the last weekend in June to Labour Day
  • Attend training day on June 20th

Support provided:

  • Volunteer Manual, orientation and training
