Sierra Club Canada Foundation (SCCF) is recruiting new board and committee members for the upcoming term, starting in June 2026.

Board positions are an exciting chance for members of the communities where we work to make a real impact for the environment, build meaningful connections, and have fun doing so! By becoming a board member you’ll be at the centre of the most pressing work of the Canadian environmental movement.

We strongly encourage applications from Indigenous Peoples, Black and racialized persons, individuals with disabilities, 2SLGBTQIA+ people, and others from equity-deserving communities. As part of this invitation, we recognize that there remains work for our entire sector to do as to commit to fostering the conditions for folks from equity-deserving communities to feel supported and valued in our work together. We are committed to building and maintaining a work environment that is welcoming to people who bring other ways of seeing, knowing and communicating to our work.

In addition to at-large nominees, we are seeking candidates who are eligible and interested in offering to serve as Prairie Chapter Director, liaising with Prairie Chapter members and programs located in Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Manitoba.

About our organization

SCCF is a registered charity whose mission is to unite people and communities to defend nature through justice-driven, democratic action. We cultivate hope, belonging, and leadership by boldly pursuing new strategies and amplifying unheard voices.

Since 1971, SCCF has accomplished tens of millions of dollars’ worth of important work, reached millions of people with environmental messages, and helped introduce whole new generations to environmentalism. From small local projects to large, multi-year campaigns with many volunteers, scientists and organizations, we are at the core of it all: we believe we are powerful together!

In 2020, our membership committed to create a movement for positive change in the decade ahead, the Decade of Change:

• We champion climate solutions and a rapid transition to 100% clean energy.
• We fight for environmental and social justice.
• We work to protect and restore nature and endangered species.
• We believe in getting people outside to explore and enjoy the outdoors.
• We promote the conservation of resources.

We are funded by individual donors, grassroots memberships, foundations and government grants. We are unique in the environmental movement because we enable average citizens to organize activities that improve our local, national and global environments.

Roles and Responsibilities

Board Members

Board members work together to provide proper governance and oversight to the organization. They work collaboratively with the SCCF team, including staff, board members and volunteers, to implement our new strategic plan, and to increase our capacity and impact through fundraising and growing our membership base. We seek those who work well in a team setting and have excellent communication and listening skills.

The board of directors meets once a month for 1.5 hours. Members of the board are expected to participate in at least one committee, assist in fundraising and support the work of the organization.

Regional and Sierra Youth directors are expected to liaise with their chapters.

Committee Members

Committee members work together to achieve mandates related to their focal areas. They use email and roughly monthly meetings to move these goals. Active committees with their typical monthly meeting day are listed below the Board bios on the website here.

All board and committee meetings are held online.

Qualifications, Skills and Experience

Nominees must be members of SCCF and age 18 or older at the time of their election or appointment to the board. Preference will be given to applicants who have an understanding of equity, diversity and inclusion. Proficiency in English is required and bilingualism is an asset as is knowledge of Indigenous languages. Selections will also factor in skills, experience, geography and diversity of the entire board. You are a strong candidate if you have experience, knowledge and abilities in any of the following:

• Nonprofit governance and Ontario nonprofit laws
• Fundraising and/or membership development experience
• Communications, including social media
• Financial literacy and/or accounting skills
• A good sense of humour

Positions

Board Positions

The SCCF Board of Directors consists of 12 to 14 elected directors: six to eight directors-at-large, five regional directors, and a Sierra Youth director. Each year the elected board may appoint two additional directors to serve as Secretary and Treasurer. All other directors are elected for two-year terms, or for the balance of a two-year term if a vacancy occurs mid-term. Currently, we seek the following:

• Youth Director (1 vacancy). Only SCCF members who are under 30 years old are eligible to apply for this position.
• Prairies Director (1 vacancy). Only SCCF members normally residing in Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Manitoba are eligible to apply for this position.
• Directors-at-large (up to 3 vacancies). All members are eligible to apply for these positions.

Committee Positions

In addition to and separate from the board positions listed above, we are also seeking members interested in serving in a volunteer capacity on the following committees:

• Executive Committee of Sierra Youth (must be 30 years or younger) and Atlantic Canada Chapters
• Finance Committee
• National Conservation Committee
• Communications Committee
• Development Committee
• Justice, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion Committee

If you are nominating someone else, please provide us with the name and contact information of that individual, and a brief biography of the person you are nominating via email to nominations@sierraclub.ca .

Applicants will be reviewed by the Nominations Committee and contacted with further information about their candidacy. Successful nominees will be voted onto the Board by our membership at our AGM in June.
