VOLUNTEER POSITION

Role: Volunteer Coordinator

Biosphere Eco-Cities Canada (BECC) is looking for a volunteer to assist its board and secretariat with recruitment of volunteers.

BECC was formed in 2021 to support development of Biosphere Eco-Cities (BECs) in Canada. BECs use simple themes and tools to engage people in sustainability. There are currently initiatives in five cities – Ottawa (since 2009) and Toronto, Brampton, Edmonton, and Vancouver (the last four since 2021).

The BECC Volunteer Coordinator will support engagement and retention of volunteers in BECC and also in the five BEC cities. This person will report to the BECC Executive Director (ED).

In the short term, this person will recruit volunteers for project teams in BEC cities. This may involve a) research on organizations in BECs who may assist with recruitment, b) research on potential partner organizations for recruitment, c) drafting of posters to advertise positions. There may also be some recruitment for volunteers for national BECC teams.

In the longer term, the Volunteer Coordinator could provide create a volunteer strategy for BECs and BECC. This could include:

• Parameters for an orientation package,
• A self-evaluation system for volunteers, and
• Training suggestions

A business school study produced by the University of Ottawa for BECC could provide ideas.

It is expected that the HR Coordinator would be willing to commit 4-5 hours per week for a year to this volunteer position.
