Newmarket Cycles – Program Assistant

Would you enjoy spending the summer outdoors, riding a bike, exploring Newmarket’s trail system, learning bike repair skills, and helping people stay active and healthy? If so, then this might be the job for you!

Newmarket Cycles — a project of The Centre for Active Transportation (TCAT) — is Newmarket’s first community bicycle hub. Newmarket Cycles' goal is to build cycling culture in Newmarket by removing barriers to riding a bike by providing free programming and cycling education. We want to support Newmarket residents in feeling more confident and connected to riding a bike.

Newmarket Cycles is hiring a Program Assistant to support with the Summer 2024 program season. Working with the Newmarket Cycles Project Coordinator, the Program Assistant will help us deliver bike-related programming at our community bike hub and across Newmarket in collaboration with partners such as Smart Commute Central York, the York Region District School Board, and the Newmarket Public Library.

The Newmarket Cycles Program Assistant will play a key role in delivering Newmarket Cycles' programming through:

  • Aiding in the delivery of workshops on cycling-related topics in partnership with the Newmarket Public Library.
  • Providing evaluation support by tracking key metrics such as number of participants and number of bikes fixed at all events.
  • Assisting with group rides on local trails and cycling infrastructure across Newmarket.
  • Taking photo and video content at Newmarket Cycles' events and promoting upcoming programs on social media.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Create a welcoming atmosphere for all program participants and volunteers, with the goal of creating a space where everyone can feel comfortable asking questions and learning new skills.
  • Greet and direct participants and volunteers at the bike repair booth, at times taking responsibility for registration and maintaining a flow of people and bicycles.
  • Working with a team of volunteers and the Project Coordinator.
  • Generate content (i.e., photos and video) for Newmarket Cycles social media.
  • Track the appropriate metrics such as number of program participants, number of bikes fixed, etc.
  • Other duties as assigned by the Program Coordinator.

Qualifications

  • Strong interpersonal skills and experience engaging adults and youth
  • Passionate about promoting cycling in the suburbs.
