Job Title: Animal Care Worker
Type: age 30 & under / summer
Organization: Turtle Pond Wildlife Centre

Location: Val Caron, near Sudbury, Ontario
Accomodations: Limited free private sleep cabins available on-site (please specify if accomodations are required). Meals are not included. Transportation is recommended as wildlife centre is located in a rural setting, approximately 2 km from nearest bus stop

Status: Full-time, contract (8 weeks, 35 hours per week)
Rate of Pay: $16.70/hour 

Turtle Pond Wildlife Centre is a wildlife rehabilitation centre in Northern Ontario, located in Val Caron, Ontario, (Greater Sudbury, Canada). It was founded in 2017 by Gloria Morissette and is a registered charity. Turtle Pond is the sole authorized wildlife rehabilitation centre serving roughly 130,000 square kilometres of Northeastern Ontario with intakes from as far away as Kenora, Timmins, Manitoulin Island, Killarney, and North Bay. The Centre treats a wide variety of patients including reptiles like turtles and snakes, small mammals like raccoons, hares, squirrels, and birds like birds of prey and songbirds.

Job Summary:

The Animal Care Worker will:

  • Work with students and volunteers in the administration of care of wildlife species at Turtle Pond Wildlife Centre.
  • Provide daily care to wildlife intakes including feeding patients, cleaning enclosures, developing, and implementing enrichment opportunities, and helping with other duties as assigned.
  • Monitoring wildlife health and providing regular feedback on their status.
  • Maintaining daily wildlife care charts.
  • Follow schedules for feeding and cleaning.
  • Clean and maintain facilities daily.
  • Contribute to education and communications planning as requested.

Minimum Qualifications:

The candidate may be enrolled in a post-secondary academic study or have relevant experience in a field such as zoology, veterinary studies, or other environmental related fields.

Minimum Competencies:

  • A strong aptitude to care for wildlife.
  • Knowledge of health and safety protocols.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability to manage time, provide feedback, and be team oriented.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience working with wildlife or animals is considered an asset.

Other requirements:

  • Between 15 and 30 years of age at the start of the employment*
  • Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person to whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act for the duration of the employment
  • Have a valid Social Insurance Number at the start of employment and be legally entitled to work in Canada in accordance with relevant provincial or territorial legislation and regulations
  • The candidate will need to comply with all Turtle Pond Wildlife Centre policies

*The candidate must be 15 years of age at the beginning of the employment period. The candidate may be more than 30 years of age at the end of the employment period as long as the candidate was 30 at the beginning of the employment period.
