Positions: Permaculture homestead — food production work exchange
Type: full season May 1 – Oct 31, live on-site, organic produce provided, monthly stipend, more (see below)
Homestead: Salt Spring Sprouts and Mushrooms
Location: Salt Spring Island, British Columbia

Salt Spring Sprouts/Feral Farm is seeking a self-motivated, engaged & enthusiastic, hard-working individual or couple to join our team!

Accommodation, including internet and utilities, is provided as a rent trade for a 900 sq ft studio space as well as monthly pay. The space is partially furnished with couches, a bed, table and chairs, gas stovetop, fridge, etc, but requires some kitchen gear. From May to October, we require a commitment of 30 hours per week, 2 market shifts per month and some involvement in permaculture land projects. The land projects are not part of the rent trade, but rather an opportunity to participate in homesteading/organic gardening for the sake of practicing resiliency skills and eating garden fresh produce. Land projects may include subsistence-scale food production and preservation, compost-building, garden bed making, irrigation, cover cropping, humanure, soil building, seed-saving, etc. We welcome our landmates to enjoy eating from the gardens quite freely as long as we’re all putting in a little effort. Time spent on land projects is flexible and minimal.

Work days primarily involve preparing our organic sprouts for farmers markets and wholesale clients on and off island. The work is indoors and is set in a relaxed, music-infused commercial kitchen environment. We attend 4 farmers markets per week and have wholesale clients on Salt Spring, in Victoria and the Cowichan Valley.

Our home-based food production business is located on a permaculture homestead of 6 1/2 mostly forested acres. On the homestead, young apple, pear, plum, mulberry, peach, fig, hazel and cherry trees are in their productive stages. We have small-scale (but ever expanding) subsistence vegetable, herbaceous and bramble gardens and a 20'x 60' greenhouse currently in its 3rd year of production. We are specifically seeking individuals who would enjoy working with our sprout business but who also share a passion for other aspects of homesteading so that we can share and collaborate on projects when time allows.

A little about us:

We are a young family of three (ourselves and our 6 year old daughter). We love plants!! We also love practicing homesteading skills like growing, building, foraging, and preserving. We love hiking and enjoying the beautiful island we live on. We get quite busy in the summer and so we work well with folks who are self-directed and who feel comfortable catching us in the gardens and asking for opportunities to learn and participate. We also love getting into thought-provoking conversation about culture, politics, ecology, etc. while working together in the kitchen. We currently have a crew of 4 other people beside ourselves, all between 20-40 years of age who live and work with us on our homestead.

Specific qualities we are seeking in applicants include: positivity, ease in working with/sharing space with others, ability to perform physical tasks in the gardens like digging, pushing heavy wheel barrows, turning compost, etc., someone with a passion for health, wellness, nature, community building and homesteading.

We are seeking support as soon as possible.
