Position: Young Urban Forest Leader
Organization: LEAF (Local Enhancement and Appreciation of Forests)
Location: Toronto, Ontario

Are you a young person who is passionate about nature, community engagement, and stewardship? You may be a perfect fit for the Young Urban Forest Leader (YUFL) Program provided by LEAF!

The YUFL Program is a free training opportunity designed to provide hands-on skills in the field of arboriculture, urban forestry and community engagement to 12 young people (ages 18 to 29) over five months (May to September). Through this program, participants support a tree planting or care initiative in a community, grow their confidence as a leader and connect with other passionate people. The program also seeks to support youth from underrepresented groups within arboriculture and urban forestry including (but not limited to) women, non-binary people, Indigenous peoples, newcomers, LGBTQ+ persons and visible minorities

Benefits to participants:

  • Gain training and hands-on experience in the fields of arboriculture and urban forestry
  • Develop skills in leadership, team work, public speaking, event coordination, community outreach and media relations
  • Gain insight into potential career paths and network with industry professionals
  • Contribute to community building and increased public appreciation of the urban forest

YUFL participants work in collaboration with a Toronto community group, with mentorship from LEAF staff to:

  • Assess the urban forest in the community and develop an “Action Plan” for stewardship and planting priorities
  • Conduct an inventory and health assessment of trees
  • Host outreach events in the community to engage the public and promote tree planting
  • Host a local tree tour

Applicant Criteria

Applicants must be aged 18-29. They must attend all 15 hours of LEAF’s Tree Tenders Training and commit five hours per week from May through September. Priority will be given to applicants from underrepresented groups within arboriculture and urban forestry and/or those with a need to participate in a fully-funded training program.
