Position Title: Youth Club Assistant
Organization: High Park Nature Centre
Location: Toronto, Ontario

High Park Rangers – WEDNESDAYS Afterschool (April 5th to June 14th): 1 POSITION

Objective: Assist our educators in delivering programs to youth aged 12 to 16 years old. This programs offer youth the opportunity to explore High Park and learn about natural history while developing leadership skills. Your volunteer work will directly support the Nature Centre’s mission of promoting knowledge of High Park’s natural systems and inspiring a sense of wonder, as you help our educators teach children in and about the natural world.

Tasks and Responsibilities:

  • Attend each session of your assigned club, arriving 30 minutes before the club start time and leaving 30 minutes after the club ends.
  • Prepare and set up activity materials at the beginning of each session, including writing the club name on a chalkboard.
  • Participate in club activities and encourage children to participate.
  • Maintain the cleanliness of the Nature Centre by tidying materials at the end of each session, sweeping the floors, and collecting leftover materials on the trails.
  • Demonstrate kindness and professionalism when communicating with youth, staff, parents, and fellow volunteers.
  • Model respect and appreciation for the natural world.
  • Keep track of your volunteer hours by signing in and out each session.


  • Must be 18 years or older
  • Previous experience working with youth
  • Ability to follow instructions and be supervised while working
  • Ability to work in a team setting
  • Ability to complete work in a short time frame (excellent time management skills)
  • Capable of hiking the trails in High Park
  • Excellent social skills
  • Creative and organized, with an interest in craft projects
  • Must be punctual and reliable

Commitment: These positions require a commitment of approximately 3 hours per week . Spring clubs run from April to June.

Start Date: April 2017

Probation: To ensure our staff and participants are receiving high-quality support, you will be subject to a one-month probationary period. At the end of one month, your staff leader will evaluate and provide feedback on your performance and conduct, to determine whether you are the right fit for the club and for the High Park Nature Centre.

Location: Our building is located at 375 Colborne Lodge Drive in High Park. Both our building as well as our outdoor classroom is wheelchair accessible.


  • Recognition of your work will be included in our Annual Report.
  • Receive a discount on our adult workshops throughout your time as a volunteer. Receive a letter of reference upon request after 40 hours of volunteer work.
  • Participate in the evaluation of our volunteer program and contribute to ongoing enrichment of the program.
  • Observe experienced educators teach environmental education in an outdoor setting.
  • Gain valuable teaching experience by leading activities at your request and at the discretion of your staff leader.

Orientation and Training: Mandatory orientation will be TBA. A volunteer handbook will be provided in advance of the orientation session to explain the High Park Nature Centre’s policies and procedures.

4. Police record check (fee reimbursed by the High Park Nature Centre after 10 hours of volunteer work)
