Wanted: CN Tower Climb for Nature – Event Day Volunteers

Description & Details

Over 5,600 climbers and over 1.4 million dollars were raised in our 2018 CN Tower Climb for Nature, and we couldn’t have done it without the incredible enthusiasm, dedication and support of our hundreds of volunteers who were vital to this amazing success!

We look forward to having you join us this year for an incredible volunteering experience, and enabling WWF to continue our important conservation efforts across Canada focusing on our: Oceans, Fresh Water, Arctic, Species at Risk and Climate and Energy initiatives.

Volunteer Key Details

  • Minimum Age – To volunteer at this event, you must be at least 16 years of age. Volunteers under the age of 18 must have written permission from their parent(s) or legal guardian(s). Those under 16 who would like to participate are asked to submit a formal request to: volunteers@wwfcanada.org For this application to be considered, your parent(s) or legal guardian(s) MUST attend the event and volunteer alongside you for your entire shift.
  • Orientation Sessions – Volunteers will be asked to attend an orientation (at CN Tower and/or Metro Toronto Convention Centre) on Monday April 1, 2019. Volunteers on the Registration team must attend a hands-on training session prior to the event, which will be available on either Thursday March 28 (evening), or Saturday March 30 (morning). Details will be provided closer to the event.
  • Time – Most volunteer shifts begin at: 5:00AM and it is extremely important that volunteers arrive on time. If you do not feel that you can truly commit to arriving by 5:00 AM, please do not sign up for these positions. We ask all volunteers to remain in their positions for the full timeframes unless otherwise directed by a team captain and/or an event organizer.
  • Refreshments - We truly appreciate your commitment and promise that refreshments and light fare will be available throughout your shift. Water will also be available throughout the day for all volunteers, and we encourage you to drink lots and to bring your re-usable water bottles
  • Transportation – Please consider your transportation options to the site before you sign up for a position. On weekends, the TTC subway system is not in service until 6:00 AM on Saturdays and 8:00 AM on Sundays. This can make getting downtown more difficult. However, the Blue Line bus routes are in service and stop very close to the site. More information will be provided to help make sure you have a smooth arrival!
  • Security Check – Please note that a few specific volunteer positions within the CN Tower require official security checks (vulnerable sector police check). You will be notified directly if your position requires an advanced security check.
  • Community Service Hours – Volunteers who are interested in receiving documentation for their Community Service Hours are asked to request a reference letter by emailing volunteers@wwfcanada.org directly. Reference letters will be emailed after the event. Additional Community Service hours can be earned by attending training and orientation sessions!

Volunteer Positions

WWF-Canada is looking for volunteers to fill a variety of positions at our 2019 Climb. As there are a number of different positions, we recommend that you carefully read the descriptions of all the positions prior to signing up. Please be sure to note the date, start/end time, requirements and best personality traits and skill set recommended for the position. If a team/position has been filled, we may suggest an alternate position for your consideration. Please note we will make every effort to place you in the area you selected, however due to circumstances beyond our control, occasionally volunteers can be asked to assist in other areas should the need arise.


Coat Check

Shifts: Saturday, April 13th from 5:00am – 12:00pm and/or Sunday, April 14th from 5:00am – 12:00pm

An interactive role where volunteers provide climbers a safe area to leave their coats. From here, you will put some of your customer service skills to use and direct climbers to the check-in tables and answer any questions.

Ideal Volunteer: An outgoing and confident individual that is comfortable working in a busy and fast-paced environment. Display excellent communication skills, are polite and professional and have a positive attitude.


Food Runners

Shifts: Saturday, April 13th from 5:00am – 12:00pm and/or Sunday, April 14th from 5:00am – 12:00pm

Can't sit still? Like being on the move, and want to experience different areas of the climb? Volunteer as a Food Runner to provide food and refreshments to staff and other volunteers.

Ideal Volunteer: An outgoing individual that is happy to be on the move for several hours! Able to communicate with others and have a friendly disposition.


Floater

Shifts: Saturday, April 13th from 5:00am – 12:00pm and/or Sunday, April 14th from 5:00am – 12:00pm

Not sure where you want to volunteer? Or want the opportunity to perhaps volunteer at more than one area? This opportunity will give you the chance to interact with numerous staff members, volunteers and climbers! Experience the climb by providing support in volunteer positions that are in great need! You will be assigned your position when you arrive in the morning of the event, and will likely be reassigned to a new area half way through your shift.

Ideal Volunteer: An outgoing, dynamic and flexible individual who is able to adapt to various situations. Has strong communication and interpersonal skills. Does not mind standing or sitting for extended times and is able to lift heavy items.


Hands-Free Check

Shifts: Saturday, April 13th from 5:00am – 12:00pm and/or Sunday, April 14th from 5:00am – 12:00pm

Oh no, a climber forgot to leave their phone behind and are carrying keys! Working with hands-free check, you will Interact with WWF staff, other volunteers and climbers by ensuring individuals are abiding by the Hands-Free safety policy before they begin their climb to ensure they only have the basics and are complying with all safety standards.

Ideal Volunteer: An outgoing and friendly individual who is comfortable in providing clear instructions and being firm with climbers to follow rules.


Hydration Station

Shifts: Saturday, April 13th from 5:00am – 12:00pm and/or Sunday, April 14th from 5:00am – 12:00pm

Interact with climbers before and after their Climb for Nature by providing them with water. Watch them light up when they see you after they have finished the Climb and are exhausted- you will be their favourite person with water in your hands!

Ideal Volunteer: An individual who is enthusiastic, outgoing and friendly, and does not mind standing for several hours.


Incentive Prizes

Shifts: Saturday, April 13th from 5:00am – 12:00pm and/or Sunday, April 14th from 5:00am – 12:00pm

A rewarding position in which you reward climbers for reaching specific fundraising goals by giving them their various prizes once they're finished climbing the tower. Have some fun with our stuffed animals, and get a chance to make so many of our climbers smile!

Ideal Volunteer: A friendly, enthusiastic and detail-oriented individual who enjoys interacting and communicating with all the incredible climbers. Able to remain patient, polite and professional while dealing with long line-ups.


Line Up Monitor

Shifts: Saturday, April 13th from 5:00am – 12:00pm and/or Sunday, April 14th from 5:00am – 12:00pm

Create a smooth and efficient experience for climbers to get from registration to the climb. Provide direction, assist with crowd control, and help answer any questions.

Ideal Volunteer: A friendly, enthusiastic and detail-oriented individual who enjoys interacting and communicating with all the incredible climbers. Able to remain patient, polite and professional while dealing with long line-ups.


Walking Directions

Shifts: Saturday, April 13th from 5:00am – 12:00pm and/or Sunday, April 14th from 5:00am – 12:00pm

Work indoors and outdoors of downtown Toronto by providing directions individuals along the Path to the CN Tower by answering any questions, and instructing those that may be lost. This is a great opportunity to work alongside your friends as you guide people along the way.

Ideal Volunteer: An individual that is outgoing and enthusiastic that has the ability to provide directions and answer questions to climbers.
**Note: Involves working outdoors- wear whether permitting clothing


Registration (18+)

Shifts: Saturday, April 13th from 5:00am – 12:00pm and/or Sunday, April 14th from 5:00am – 12:00pm

Work with WWF staff and other volunteers to check-in and register individuals for the Climb. You will provide each climber with a time chip/card, wrist band, etc. and answer any questions that they may have.

Ideal Volunteer: A friendly, enthusiastic and detail-oriented individual who enjoys interacting and communicating with all the incredible climbers. Able to remain patient, polite and professional while dealing with long line-ups and stressful situations. Have excellent communication skills and can follow multi-step instructions. Must be comfortable on computers and with data-entry.

**Note: Must be 18+ years of age or older.
Must attend a mandatory training session.


Base Cheer Squad

Shifts: Saturday, April 13th from 5:00am – 12:00pm and/or Sunday, April 14th from 5:00am – 12:00pm

Show your support by providing a positive, enthusiastic atmosphere for those that have just descended the tower after an accomplished climb! Direct individuals back to the Metro Toronto Convention Centre (MTCC) where they can pick-up their t-shirts, incentive prizes, and any personal belongings.

Ideal Volunteer: Individuals have strong communication skills, and are friendly, enthusiastic and outgoing.


Glass Floor Cheer Squad (18+)

Shifts: Saturday, April 13th from 5:00am – 12:00pm and/or Sunday, April 14th from 5:00am – 12:00pm

Experience the CN Tower by looking through the glass floor! As climbers ascend to the top, cheer and clap for them for all of their hard-work as these individuals just climbed for nature! Provide each climber with water and kindly encourage their descent down the tower.

Ideal Volunteer: Filled with positive energy and enthusiasm! Have excellent communication skills, love interacting with people, are polite and professional.

**Note: Must be 18+ years of age or older for this position.


T-Shirt Distributors

Shifts: Saturday, April 13th from 5:00am – 12:00pm and/or Sunday, April 14th from 5:00am – 12:00pm

Once climbers have completed their Climb, volunteers will provide souvenir WWF climb t-shirts to each climber. They will get to wear this proudly throughout the day, and keep as a memento as it will include their climb time on the back!

Ideal Volunteer: Individuals who are detail-oriented, friendly, outgoing and patient. Able to strongly communicate and follow multi-step instructions.
