Company: Arctic Chalet Ltd.
Location: Inuvik, Northwest Territories
The Arctic Chalet is a beautifully landscaped eco-friendly, non-smoking tourist establishment located near Inuvik in the Canadian Arctic, Northwest Territories. We provide beautiful cabin accommodations, rental cars, dog boarding and eco-friendly adventure tours above the Arctic circle in the true Arctic. We also offer an educational program called Husky School that all of our staff participate in.
We currently have a couple of positions available for healthy, PHYSICALLY FIT people who are hard working and passionate about learning about husky sled dogs, and who would enjoy living and working with us in our diverse business for a few months to a year. Start dates are somewhat flexible, but we really need help starting mid August. We would would consider paying a part-time salary to those who can come and help out starting by mid August and working through end of September.
To live and work in the Arctic is a wonderful adventure and for many has been an experience of a lifetime. Staff will have the chance to immerse themselves into our natural surroundings where nature is beautiful and wild and can experience the varied seasons of the Arctic year.
Our staff also have opportunities to attend local community events and to participate in some of our adventure tours that may include travel to other Arctic communities, but …our 39 wonderful white huskies are the big attraction and the learning benefits of participating as a volunteer in our Husky School are the best!
We provide staff housing, usually in a private staff room furnished with towels and bedding. All rooms have an oil heater and some rooms have running water. We also have one staff cabin suitable for two people to share. A laundry facility is available for staff to use free of charge as well as a Bath House with toilet and shower.
Staff members are taken to town once a week to purchase groceries which they prepare and cook for themselves in the staff kitchen stocked with dishes and cookware.
Staff also receive a limited amount of high-speed wireless internet each day for keeping in touch with family and friends via emails.
Husky School & Volunteer Kennel Work
Our White Huskies are a unique, white, blue-eyed Arctic husky breed (Siberian/Malamute) and are beautiful, intelligent and strong with wonderful dispositions. There are 39 adults currently living in our kennel, all in need of attention! These dogs are very well socialized and interact beautifully with people. We will teach you all about husky sled dogs in our Husky School program.
Our dogs live in a new kennel complex that makes working there very efficient. Staff share the responsibility of taking care of our huskies and boarding dogs from the community on a daily basis. Daily kennel duties include feeding, watering, cleaning pens. Staff help with exercising and have the opportunity to train the dogs individually as well as in the dog teams.
In summer we exercise the dogs using 4-wheeler ATVs. These morning runs sometimes include taking tourists along for a short tour in our side-by-side ATVs with seats. In winter we use dog sleds for training runs and dog sled tours. Our staff help prepare guests for their tour and provide support on snowmobiles during the tours.
A gross monthly salary of $1,200 will be paid for general work duties that are not part of the Husky School program.
Return Flight and Bonus
For those choosing to stay for a full year we will offer a $1,000 bonus plus a flight back to any Canadian destination that Air Canada or one of their connectors flies to when the work term is satisfactorily completed.
As we live in a natural environment close to nature, we would like to find staff who love the out-of-doors and have a healthy natural-looking physical appearance. Employees should practice good hygiene and be clean, neat and tidy, non-smoking, non-drinking and drug-free with no visible tattoos, body piercings or radical hair styles. For men we require a short clean-cut hair style which will be maintained throughout the work term.
A driver’s licence, class 4 or 5 is a huge asset, especially a class 4. A drivers’ abstract (driving record) will be required for all drivers. Experience working with animals is desirable as well as some experience in the tourism industry.
For the position of Innkeeper we need someone with office experience or training to help with reservations and bookings, and also someone who has bookkeeping skills. Excellent communication skills are most desirable. Some housekeeping duties will also be required when needed.
For the Maintenance and Yard position we are looking for someone with practical skills and experience working with tools and equipment or who has experience in farm work or in general maintenance. Driving our water truck may be required.
Most importantly, staff must be legal to work in Canada and hold a valid Canadian work permit upon arrival. We do not get involved with sponsorships.
So…if you have worked with animals or dogs in particular and can relate well to them, if you are interested in working in the tourism industry, if you have a spirit of adventure, love nature and are ambitious, this work opportunity may be perfect for you!
Please read our EMPLOYMENT/VOLUNTEER page on the web site and then email us and include several recent photos or yourself, a resume and a letter of introduction telling about yourself and why you would like to work here with us in the Arctic.
