Type: work-stay / volunteer with accom., more (see below)
Organization: Wolf Den Nature Retreat
Location: Algonquin Park, Ontario

Spend an amazing couple of weeks working at the edge of world-famous Algonquin Park as a host at the Wolf Den Hostel & Nature Retreat. Meet people from all over the globe, and use time off to explore the wonders of the park by canoe, kayak, bike, hiking and camping.

Work For Stay Volunteer Host

3.5 hrs work per day in exchange for private use of our staff trailer, use of our common kitchen and access to our canoe.  These hours can be given daily or accrued by working full-time for a few days, giving you the chance to take the next few days fully off.  (Sweet!)

Summary of Responsibilities:

We have a pretty egalitarian approach to teamwork at the Wolf Den. All staff (including the owners) are involved in every aspect of keeping the Den clean and happy. Daily team responsibilities include cleaning the main lodge and outdoor wash-station, copious amounts of laundry, negotiating compost access with the racoons, turning over bunkhouses and cabins between guests, helping out in our gardens, setting a welcoming atmosphere, keeping an eye on the campfire at night, chatting with guests about their adventures in the park, offering trail and canoe route tips, and answering questions about park ecology and history.

Requirements and Attributes:

  • Friendly, outgoing and able to multi-task and work hard
  • Ability to take initiative and work independently with little supervision
  • Additional languages are a big-time asset
  • Highly responsible & reliable
  • Ability to work well under pressure in a sometimes fast-paced environment, and to maintain motivation in slower-paced times
  • Ability to work cohesively with fellow colleagues as part of a team
  • Most importantly, love of our natural world!

Work Term:

For periods of 1 to 3 weeks any time during the months of July, August or September.  Longer terms might be considered if you're interested.
