Position: Tropical Wildlife Sanctuary Volunteer
Organization: Kids Saving the Rainforest
Location: Costa Rica, Central America
Type: volunteer / nightly fee to cover food & housing, minimum 2 weeks stay (see below)

Kids Saving the Rainforest (KSTR) is looking for volunteers to help in the Wildlife Sanctuary, located just outside Manuel Antonio, Costa Rica. We are looking for active, passionate individuals to help us with zookeeping of wild animals that are ineligible for rehabilitation and release back into the wild. Volunteers must be extremely dedicated to animal conservation and willing to forgo personal comfort for the benefit of the animals they are helping for the duration of their stay.

Reporting to KSTR Sanctuary staff, volunteers will have the opportunity to participate in the following activities:

  • Animal husbandry with Sanctuary animals
  • Feeding, along with members of staff and interns
  • Assesment of daily health and behavior
  • Food and enclosure Enrichment
  • Capture and restraint of animals
  • Assistance in medical care if needed
  • Zoological administration tasks
  • Observations of sanctuary animals, particularly with introductions and changes to the animals' habitats
  • Sanctuary record keeping
  • Cage ceaning, maintenance, and redesign

No prior experience is necessary. However, all applicants must have good communication skills, a strong interest in animal conservation, and the ability to work and live in remote locations with others. Minimum 2 weeks stay is required with some flexibility. Volunteers pay a nightly rate of $70 to cover food, housing, and training, although reduced rates are available for longer stays. Spanish language skills, as well as experience traveling in a tropical country and living in remote conditions are preferred. Volunteers must be willing to live in coed shared dormitores unless they decide to upgrade to a private cottage. Must complete required vaccinations and purchase current international health insurance while in Costa Rica. Must be at least 18 years old and have a valid passport/visa.
